Can't Update Avast after Worm Removal
« on: August 11, 2010, 06:09:01 PM »
I used Avast Boot Scan and Malware Bytes to remove the Win32:SysPatch worm, and now Avast can't update itself. I tried deleting the program and re-installing, and I even deleted all references to Avast from my registry before re-installing, but nothing works. Any ideas on how to fix this program. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Can you use the browser? Do other programs update themselves?
Which is your firewall?
Is avast.setup allowed to connect?

I can get on the Internet (Google), but Windows updates does not work either. My browser is IE8. I was able to register the Avast software, but no updates. Hope this helps. I just noticed that I can update Malware Bytes.

Try this

Go to Control Panel and select Internet Options
Select the Connections TAB
Select LAN settings button
Ensure there is no tick in the Proxy Server box
Select OK and restart Internet explorer

And for Firefox there are instructions on this page and you want the setting to be no proxy

OK, I checked the Proxiy server setting and it was unchecked. I also found that if I go to Control Panel, Uninstall Programs, select Avast and chose Update program, the software runs the updates. So, it seems the problem resides in Avast someplace, not the computer.
