 ??? Technical,
I have been looking for ashQuick - can't find any reference to it.
As I understand your suggestion, if I get a download manager installed and add the line instructing it to scan with ashQuick, then all downloads are automatically scanned when the download is completed. When I read about download managers, the information focused on speedy downloads and organizing. In my case, with DSL and not many downloads, the only thing I would be interested in is the automatic scan, if the Avast! 4.1 Home Edition has that feature.

If you installed Avast! to the default directory, Then this is where you'll find it. >C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe
Hope that helps. :)

Hey Bob,
Wow, it's there! Now, do you suppose the free Fresh Download Manager would work?
I am so excited to have this forum to learn from;  I didn't try it before, because it looks like it is so - technical - and I am a relatively new computer user; we just got our first one exactly four years ago and didn't have a clue how to learn to use it.
Has anyone told you lately that you are much appreciated? Your wife is a lucky lady-

Hi Sojourner,'
My wife said "That might be your opinion but, you don't have to live with him"!!!!!
And FreshDownloader should work just fine or any of the ones that Technical suggested.

Thank you, Technical - I'll check it out.
While I was waiting for your reply, I asked Google for info on free download managers; there is a new one called "Fresh". I wonder if it is any good? (I probably should not have mentioned that -- I appreciate your help very much.)

Fresh Download works nice but I prefer FlashGet as I can 'store' the download information (the url, version, size, etc.).

Is the pic you as a youngster? Nice looking little guy! :)

Yeah, it's me  ;)

 :) Hi Technical,
This is just what I need - details. Now, is there another way to store the download information so I could then go ahead with the Fresh?  Keep in mind I am not in business or downloading a lot of things - just some things, now and then. I like to download email stationery and a new program occasionally, but when I am downloading stationery, I don't want to save it to my computer, click scan, then I'm not even sure I can move it to the stationery folder; I have been just choosing "Open" and downloading directly into the stationery file, but I am told I should never do that. Please comment --
 :)

Sojourner, do you use any download manager (like FlashGet, Dowload Accelerator Plus, GetRight, etc.)?
If so, you will be an option into its settings to add the following line:

"C:\Program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe"

This will set the download manager program to use ashQuick (the quick scanning module of avast) to scan the downloaded file when the download finishes.

Generally, you must use that line without any other parameter. For example, with FlashGet.
Some applications, to proper use ashQuick, need a parameter so you will write:

"C:\Program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" %d

or

"C:\Program files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe" %f

Do I make myself more clear?

What do those two parameters mean Technical? - and are there any more? :)

John, I think they just 'allow' the scanning to be started by the download manager. It's a must have not a choice. Some download managers requiere that.

I don't think there are more parameters for ashquick.exe  :'(
You must have the Pro version to use ashcmd.exe (command-line for DOS).

I don't use Fresh so I cannot tell if it stores or not the download information. FlashGet does.

Well, opening is 'worse' than save and scan  :-\

Better: use a download manager and scan it just after the download finishes.
At least: save the file to disk and manually scan it.
Every time: let the resident scan at high sensibility while downloading.

 :)Hi Bob,
Yes, I was told to never click "Open" for the download choice. The really strange thing is that I had already been doing that for three years, and the first thing that happened after making a folder for downloads, choosing "Save", and clicking "Scan"was - a Trojan!
I have a question on that subject, so I guess I need to start a topic in that area.

Technical -
Thank you for another tip: setting resident scan at high visibility. :)

Thanks Bob!

When I was using a freebie version of PC-Cillin (from my Bank) I tried to get it to scan files after Star Downloader had finished downloading.

All that used to happen, however, was that Star Downloader would launch PC-Cillin & then I had to tell PC-Cillin where the file was 'manually' - it was far quicker to locate the downloaded file, right-click on it, & then select 'scan'!

I've just downloaded HijackThis using Star Downloader and Avast! automatically scanned the file so I'm very pleased indeed! :)

I'm on the world's tightest budget at the moment so I've 'only' got the free version of Avast! but I think its brilliant!
