What do you mean: on-access or on-demand scanning?

You have an option called 'Scan archive files' into the sensibility slider.

You can run scheduled scans with the Pro version, not the Home (free)version.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

You can schedule a scan with the home version, but you need to to it with the taskmanager.
Technical already told you how to enable archive scanning.

you set the sensivity of the scan by pressing one of the buttons ins lower left of the avast mainscanner window, i.e. your screenshot above
(the "skull" is for chest, one is for updates, and the 3rd is what you want):

- then there pops up a little slider for the scan sensivity, and in this pop-up there's also a checkbox for archive scanning
- I think this should pop up for a short time also right after you click the Harddisk symbol (when selecting WHAT to scan)

(if not: either browse through all the options/settings, or repair/reinstall avast)

 ;)
