Another positive for Avast 5 is it's GUI, which is much better than 4 IMO.  And I agree with that scary 4.0 siren!!!

I have Avast 5 on both Windows 7 machines and it works great.  On one I installed it new, and on the other I updated from 4.8. I never updated from 4.8 on my XP desktop because of the problems that I had read about on this forum.  Have all the problems been fixed?  I would really like to put it on this machine too.

For XP, I would recommend doing a clean install from 4.8 to 5.0.594.  This seems to have resolved the issues you have heard about.

1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:
Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro  –  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
AIS  –  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Uninstall Avast through "Add/Remove Programs" through Control Panel.
5. Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
6. Reboot twice.
7. Clean your computer up (clean up cache, temporary Internet files, etc.).
8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.

Let us know how this works out for you.   :)

Thanks for all the instructions.  I had hoped there would be an easier way, but I guess not.  I will do that soon.

I just put the details in there, but it's really simple.  By doing the clean install, you will avoid any headaches later.

I concur with SafeSurf.

I keep Windows Defender updated daily on my Windows 7 system and let it run a Quick scan daily as well.

From the Windows Defender portal:
Latest definition version: 1.89.118.0

Personally I never bothered with all that faffing about and followed the avast recommendation action to install avast5 over avast 4.8 on my XP Pro SP3 system (on a much earlier build) and I had no problems at all. Some people had problems, but not everyone or the 'support' forums would have been flooded.

So I would proceed with an install over the top and only if you experience a problem should you have to consider a clean reinstall.

Thank you both.
Maybe I will do the regular install and then if I have problems, I can follow Safesurf's instructions.  As it is now I have downloaded both Avast 5 and the Avast Uninstall utility, so I am ready one way or the other.
Thanks again.

HI Roro -

I have also installed V5 over V4.8 and have had no problems at all even after 15 over-installs by now. Originally, I did 12 just after the release of V5 but 3 family members have recently had me update 3 more laptops while here for a visit.

Try the over-install as it is quicker and easier. If that fails, you can always follow SafeSurf's suggested way.

Yes, my policy is not to take an action which is designed to overcome a problem until that problem exists.
