Avast Internet Security ver 5 blocking SSL access
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:04:39 AM »
I use a newsreader that connects to Giganews and it worked fine under AVG.

A couple of days ago I changed to Avast but now I get an error when the newsreader tries to connect to Giganews.

It says: 481 SSL access not allowed

How can I fix this besides going back to AVG?

Here everything is fine and I can access the giganews website and even login without no problem(when log in I access the certificate without a problem).
Which shield is blocking the access to the website?

You could try running the AVG removal tool from their tools page. Choose the one appropriate to your OS; 32 or 64 bit.
Windows 10,Windows Firewall,Firefox w/Adblock.

I think this may be the mail shield automatically setting the SSL for the connection

Can you try: Open avast! --> Real Time Shields --> Mail Shield --> Expert Settings --> SSl accounts --> change the relevant one to no SSL

I would also ensure the avg is gone, like Tarq suggested :)

Thanks spg Scott. I went to  Giganews and they told me how to fix it.
It was indeed the setting in the Mail section.
I just changed it to no SSL and now it works fine.

Why Avast thinks a newsreader is a Mail program I dunno.

Now I got a new problem ... I have the Curse gaming client and it doesn't work either although it is listed in the allowed program in the Firewall section.
Geesh changing from AVG creates all kinds of problems.

I'm pretty sure AVG is gone. I went into Services and disabled all the AVG services < then > went to the control panel and removed it < then > ran my registry cleaner and saw it remove a reference to AVG. The only thing I haven't done is search with regedit which I may do. Not hard to do that's for sure.

I think I will eventually get the Curse problem solved. No big hurry anyway, I seldom add anything to my WOW client and I could always do it the hard way.
