Resolved Windows can't find antivirus software on my PC
« on: August 28, 2010, 09:00:40 PM »
I am running Windows 7 64 bit and have Avast (free version 5.0.594) installed. It has been running very well on my system since I got this new PC in June this year. Indeed it still seems to be running fine.
My problem is that just yesterday the ‘Windows Action Centre’ started flagging that it can’t find antivirus software on my PC. I find this a bit concerning and wondered if anyone else has encountered this problem and if they have found out how to resolve it.
For info: I have run a full system scan with Avast and also with Malwarebytes and both say my system is clean. I have also done a ‘system restore’ and run ‘chkdsk’ but still the problem persists.
Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated.

I have had this once or twice on my win7 64 system, I usually ignore it, since I know that avast! is running normally and it goes after a reboot, but if it is really bothering you, you could try restting the repository.

Since you are using Win7 there is a tool that is able to do this for you...doing it manually can be awkward:

Fixwin (need to be run as admin):

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-fix-windows-7-vista-problems-with-fixwin-utility
Zip Download: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/downloads/FixWin.zip

Choose 'system tools' on the left, and press 'Fix' next to 'Action Center and Windows Security Center.....' (like the pic here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53079.msg450314#msg450314)

Or

You could try a repair of avast!

Start -->control panel -->Programs -->uninstall a program -->avast! Antivirus -->Click 'Uninstall/Change -->Scroll down and click repair

Hi Quicksilver, and welcome to the forum.  :)

Here is an easy solution for someone else who had a similar problem:

Thank you both for your replies. I have looked at the links you have provided and I have to say I like the look of the 'Fixwin' programme as it seems to be a kind of 'one click fix' (for a non techy like myself) so I think I will try going down that route first and hopefully that will fix my problem. I also like the fact that it seems to contain fixes for quite a lot of common problems which might crop up in the future.
I am also grateful for the link to the solution that seemed to help someone else who had the same problem and if the above does not work for me I will give that a try too.
Thanks for taking the time to try and help me and I will let you know how I get on.

Just to update you. I tried the Fixwin Utillity (which by the way I could not download with Firefox) I had to use IE8 to download it. However in this case Fixwin did not work for my particular problem. So I did another System Restore, this time going back a bit further in my Restore Points and that I am glad to say has worked.
Windows now recognises my antivirus prog. Great day.

Make sure you update your Avast definitions after doing the restore.

I'd also suggest that you check your software to make sure they are updated since many have had recent updates from free Secunia PSI Inspector:  http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/.  If you are in need of any software updates or patches, it gives you the vendor's direct link and tells you the security risk.
