squares
« on: August 30, 2010, 12:16:59 AM »
hello,

i have a file name that has a square in it.  avast scans gives error that   it can not be read.  anyway, i tried all kind of things to delete this file, none worked so i decided to live with it.  now it it pops up it some of my apps when i copy text this square will be on the end
of the line of text--only a few times.  now when i start my computer i noticed that it starts up as startup app in msconfig, i did some googling but never found any clearcut way of just plain getting rid of this pesky square which now seems to be spreading .

any advice?

thanks,
craig

Hi Craig,

Welcome to the forum. :) Often times when someone is having difficulty with an AV it is due to other things.  So let's trouble shoot to see what is going on.  First I need to know the following:

1.   What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit?
2.   What version of Avast did you install?  5.0.594?
3.   What product of Avast did you install?  Free, Pro, AIS?
4.   What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including antivirus (AV), firewall (FW), and other security programs?  If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor's uninstaller's tool or another way)?
5.   Are your MS Updates (if you have Windows) current?
6.   Are the Avast definitions (updates) current?
7.   When was the last time you did any kind of scan in Avast, and if so what kind of scan was it?
8.   Do you have anything sitting in your Avast Virus Chest now?  If so, please give me a screen shot or type the exact wording.

I'm sorry for all the questions, but this will help identify issues that are causing problems.  Thank you.

1. Your Comodo FW - do you have the AV disabled?
2. FYI - There have been reported problems with Spybot SD with TeaTimer.  Do you use TeaTimer?
3. FYI - Adaware is now obsolete and has been replaced with MBAM, which you now have.
4. Was the last Avast scan you did a Full scan or a Quick scan?
5. Have you run a Boot-time scan yet?

Leave everything in your Virus Chest and do NOT delete anything.

I'd like you to update MBAM (malwarebytes) and run a FULL scan.
Quarantine (do not delete) anything that comes up positive.
Copy and paste your MBAM report in your next post.

Do you have any questions?

Do not worry about the items in the Full Scan that Avast is unable to scan as they are most likely Avast file-related.  After running your MBAM scan, please run a Boot-time scan and post your results.  Thank you.
