avast.setup
« on: September 02, 2010, 08:48:52 PM »
I've just noticed something lately.  When I first start up my system and start my browser (Opera), it takes a while.
In task manager, I see avast.setup running and CPU usage at 100%, then it goes down and back up again.
This stops after a minute or so and avast.setup is no longer in task manager.
What exactly is avast.setup and what is it doing?  Is it normal?Are there ways to modify this behavior?

avast 5, latest version
xp home sp3

Thank you.

The avast.setup is the process that checks for avast update once a connection becomes available, so it is normal. So it appears you have broadband and your connection is always on and connects early in the boot process.

- In avast5 you need to edit (using notepad) avast5.ini the [InetWD] section of the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\avast5.ini

- Broadband connections, add this line:
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 and
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 if not present (or edit AssumeAlwaysConnected=0 to AssumeAlwaysConnected=1)
Quote
[InetWD]
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
When complete save the changes, avast's self-defence module will ask for confirmation, etc. answer Yes.

The figure is seconds and the above equates to two minutes, you could try that and adjust upwards if required, 180, 240, etc.

Thanks, DavidR.
You're exactly right, broadband connection.
Since it's normal, I may just let it go, but it's nice to know where to adjust it.
Thanks again.
