Well ... while I was waiting for a reply, I went ahead and downloaded the latest version and installed it.
It uninstalled my previous version in the process, which it did not do when I let the automatic update do it.
Now all appears to be well.
Thanks for the help.   :-\

Strange... I somehow understand the problem, but the source seems to have been fixed on August 31st.
Did you have any of the (earlier) betas installed?

Not any of these current pre-release versions, I used the UI program update from 5.0.594 when 5.0.677 was released.

Hi How do you get msn to work in sandbox.
Add the executable to the Virtualized Processes list.
Real time shields > Processes Virtualization > Expert settings > Virtualized processes.

Sandbox and ye even old XP and ye very old Dell computer.

Setup

1. Computer - Dell Dimension 2400 circa 2003?
2. Operating System - XP SP3 Home Edition
3. Ram - 2 1GB DIMMs DD 1
4. Processor - 2.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 8 kilobyte primary memory cache 512 kilobyte secondary memory cache Not hyper-threaded
5. Graphics card - VISIONTEK RADEON 7000 Series [Display adapter]
6. Hard Drive Controller - Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB
7. Browser - Firefox 3.6.9
8. Browser Addons = 20 plus
9. Available Hard Drive space on OS drive - About 20GB

Firefox runs adequately for me on this computer non-sandboxed
However, sandboxed it runs very clunky and slower
Mouse cursor movement is very jerky

My guess is that this has something to do with a combination of 1-9 above.

No problems with clunkiness on my Windows 7 Home Premium machines, both netbook and desktop

However I have experienced what appears to be Java related problems running Firefox 4.0b4 on my Windows 7 64 bit computer. I can't comment about the 32bit version of Windows 7 because right now I don't use the netbook that much and did not notice any problem with the Java on the netbook before I stopped running Firefox 4.0b in the sandbox.

Firefox 4X handles Java graphics differently than Firefox 3X does.  I am now using Firefox 4.0b5 on my Windows 7 computers which is the latest beta release of Firefox but I haven't tested either Windows 7 computer yet to see if the periodic Java problems still exist or if they are limited to the 64 bit version of Windows 7.   I will wait until Firefox 4RC1 is released to try using 4.0 again in the Sandbox.

I do run some utilities at night while I am asleep that clean cache files, temporary files etc in that were created in Firefox during the day.   It could be that the problem occurred because I forgot to close Firefox before going to sleep and the cleaning utility messed up the Java.  However I noticed that closing and then reopening Firefox sandboxed did not clean up the appearance of the web pages affected.   I had to close Firefox remove it from running sandboxed and then clean all these cache and temp files, cookies etc.  Then when I reopened Firefox outside the sandbox the pages appeared okay.

If I accidentally forget to close Firefox while open non-sandboxed and these utility programs run then it appears that the Java related web page problems do not occur.

Regarding .667 and the Nightly scan of my XP computer.

I do a complete scan my computer's internal hard drive every night.  I scan my external archival and backup hard drive once a week.

The Nightly runs fine however several files were not being scanned.  I was getting the following

Scan does not read some files.  Get error message Error-Archive is password protected (42056). Note: I intentionally have not password protected these files

The list of programs currently included in the error list were

Dell Date Safe Local Backup
Spybot Search and Destroy
Users\xxxx\App Data\Roaming\Glary Utilities\
Users\xxxx\App Data\Uniblue\Driver Backup\Files

Thunderbird Backup with Moz Backup 1.4? - Get error message Error this file is a decompression bomb (42110)

-------------
Temp fix:  I either deleted some of these files and/or moved them off of my computer's hard drive so that they are no longer scanned during the "Nightly" scan.

The Nightly scan is now clean.  No virus and no errors.   I have only done this on the XP machine noted in the prior post.  Last night the scan time was about 36 minutes for 46GB of data.

All three computers have external hard drives attached.  So my file location handling and Nightly and Weekly scans are the same on all three computers.  I will follow up when I see what the Weekly scans looks like and the when I have had a chance to look at the Nightly scans on my Windows 7 netbook and Windows 7 desktop 64 bit computer.

Hi

I am using the Danish Pro version 4.8.1368. I have tried to update to version 5.0.677, using avast user interface.
I receive the message, that the program is up to date.
What should I do to get the Danish version of Avast 5.0.677?

I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

You have to download the full program as it can't be updated through the Program Update function, that's why it is reporting your 4.8 version is up to date.

I don't know if this is the multi-language version http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe - Avast! Pro antivirus Quick Start Guide http://files.avast.com/files/documentation/quick-start-guide-pro-en-ww.pdf

If not you can download the Danish Language pack, click the avast icon and from the avastUI, Settings, Language section, Install additional languages button and download the Danish pack, see image.

Hi

Thank you to both of you for the fast replies. Upgrading Avast and converting the old license key was a success.
