How do I make the transition from version 4.8 to 5 on Vista?
« on: September 11, 2010, 04:18:22 PM »
Hi,

Wanting to update to the newest version, but am still unsure as to how I should go about this properly. Can anyone help?

Right now I have the home free version 4.8 running on Vista and it works great, but I fear that version 4.8 will lose support sometime in the future. (Anybody know when this will happen?)

I wanted to know if maybe there are some instructions available as to how to go about moving from version 4.8 to version 5. Do I have to remove my old version first, or can I just install the newest version into another folder? I am thinking it may be best to just uninstall prior, due to the amount of shields and other processes that launch automatically with the software. If I have two versions installed won't that be twice the amount of processes, shields and other stuff competing for ram?

I know a lot of people probably had 4.8 installed prior, and I want to know how did you make the move from 4.8 to 5.0?

Hoping for a smooth transition after some directions...... :-\

Thank you.

The recommended action from avast, is to download the latest version of avast 5.0 and install over the top of your existing 4.8 version. This will retain your existing registration, uninstall avast 4.8 and install avast 5.0.

Whilst some have had problems with this method and have had to do a clean reinstall subsequently, I tend not to pre-empt an action unless it is required.

Thanks for the links and directions, it sounds very easy to do. :)
