Hi bob3160,

Agree with you totally. Yesterday can hurt us no more. The past is water under the bridge. The future has not arrived yet until tomorrow, so no sense worrying about that either. So all we have to live for is today. So give it your fullest effort and enjoy every minute as the present lasts.
The 2012 thing is a New Age issue resting on a way of interpreting the old Mayan Indian Elders' prophesies because a certain point in the galaxies is coming around again after roughly 26.000 years (Serpent of/in the Universe, their Snake God, Sun behind the Sun of the old Egyptians, could be something like when Moses parted the waters at the red sea, a cataclysm of some sort, some folks think about a polar shift and all the turmoil that will bring, not a good place here in Holland to experience such a fate). Well 2012 is an "occult" believe sort of.
The year 1000 brought the same anxieties for the Christians, in a nearby village no church nor dikes were being built, because the End of the World was imminent, well you know about similar issues before the Turn of the Millennium in the Year 2000, what happened? Nothing out of the obvious, goods became more expensive, and we just went on doing our daily things,  ;D

Actually the Mayan calendar is only one of the things pointing at 2012. There are others. I'm not saying I believe Doomsday is near but as a Christian I do believe it will happen some day. The Mayan calendar is based on a 5000 something year celestial cycle and since it was found on a circular stone tablet seems to me not to be saying that the world will end but simply that the cycle will end and then start over again. Just like the hands on a clock. The amazing thing about it and the real mystery is how the Mayans were able to so accurately chart and predict this cycle without any instruments like telescopes, satellite pictures or even any way to save images of the night sky at all. It would take generations of naked eye observations  and some way of measurement that we haven't discovered (or have forgotten) to even come close and they nailed it right on the head. It's astounding and so far, inexplicable.

I have to agree with Dch48 and polonus ... most experts on Mayan culture and history agree that the Mayans never did predict apocalypse for 2012, and all that will happen is that their calendar will "roll over" back to its start, same as a video-game score does if you're good enough at it.

Admittedly,  commercial films about 2012 (like the one with that as its title) are exciting to watch, but they're strictly sci-fi speculation, and most of us who are old enough to remember the older films in that genre are well aware that many of them turned out to be way off-base in regard to the way things turned out in reality.

As for that sunspot "crisis", as has been pointed out, we'll just have to wait and see how serious the effects will be on us.

This is a media scare story that keeps been pushed out by clueless journalists.

It is true that the next sunspot maximum is due in 2013, but in all likelihood it will be a very weak maximum as the sun is not behaving like it did in previous solar cycles. The chance of a major flare of the size suggested in the foreseeable future is miniscule - and most of the scenarios suggested are pure speculation. We have already gone through solar cycles many more times bigger than those expected in 2013, and the predicted doomsday scenarios are based on a few isolated instances that have been speculated as having been caused by solar activity.

Relax, it ain't going to happen.

When you mentioned films being way off, it reminded me of an old black and white movie made back in the late '50's about a trip to Mars. The ship encounters a barrage of meteors and you have the old scenes of everything shaking and the crew bouncing around. Then the camera shows you a view of the instrument panel and the main navigational instrument for interplanetary space travel is shown to be--- a compass.  I remember rolling on the floor laughing uncontrollably at that.

Fox focuses on solar flare threat

The resulting solar storm could cause a geomagnetic storm on Earth, knocking out electricity grids around the world for hours, days, or even months, bringing much of normal life grinding to a halt.

This is similar to the effects of (EMP) Electro Magnetic Pulse radiation that you will get if you detonate a nuclear weapon in the atmosphere:

It will not kill people but destroy all electronics.

The mayan people didn't even brush their teeth, what do you expect from them?

Predict the future?

They may not have had toothbrushes, but yes, they did predict the future in the sense that they calculated the time of the celestial alignment precisely with no astronomical instruments of any kind. You can't deny that's incredible. To this day, nobody knows how they were able to do it.
