RESOURCES for different Real-Time Shields..
« on: September 28, 2010, 09:32:11 AM »
hi, first time here (if posting right..) did not see a search on topics/ would check first..
(having a resources problem, crashing my java windows)

I am wondering if there shouldn't be a way to have run at minimum operation, possibly with settings/ questions asked what purpose I am computing at.. trusted sites vs resources available.  (have closed: im, mail, network shields, checking if java windows stay open with Avast gui reduced/ closed)..

I have a work time where I need maybe 12 java windows open, excel application & a few utilities.
the biggest utility is for avast as real-time protection.  have recently been hit by some root kits & was running with tea-timer (sbsd, spybot search-destroy).  believe have pc clean..

If can get a minimum run setting (eg for trusted websites.. reduce sensitivity in avast? etc)
PROBLEM:  java windows crash when I do a Calculate/Save in Excel Spreadsheet.

I cannot go in/ out of Avast every time I want to change my internet habits, minimum twice daily.
A one button switch would be really nice.  (simplest would be:  LO & NORMAL SECURITY)
without too much experiment now, WHAT RESOURCES ARE USED? for each shield componenet;  And, Which components are more necessary, especially for how Avast is setup? -thanks

Answer that might be working for now is use of utilities:
 - Anvir Process Tamer (some experiment with settings:  avast normal, excel above norm, java.exe/iexplore: high)
 - Smart RAM componenet from IOBIT (Advanced Care3 package), careful to scan for malware after install
 - possibly: Avast UI reduced/ closed, made a difference..  (stopped shields:  im, mail, newtwork)

I only have a 1.6Ghz XP sys with 650MB of RAM.
sbsd is off, have used some .reg utilities to turn off such as:  dnsdisable, ctfmonitor off, messenger, turning off all startups that i can / figure out.
know about iobit, but smart ram (stand alone) uses lo resources, if effective.

THANKS

You could start by getting rid of spybot search - destroy, the tea timer is incompatable with avast anyway, if you want an excelent second scanner get yourself malwarebytes. I would also get rid of iobit product's from your machine as this is crapware from an untrustworthy company. Not sure about your process tamer but it is probably using resources itself, you can go into msconfig and turn off some start ups that dont have to be on all the time, they'll start when you want them ie (printer) other than that you could always grab a bit more ram as this is cheap.

I just go through the startups in msconfig and turn of whatever i dont need on constantly. This is a good site just to cross reference all the start up's you have and see if you really need them, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/  You can turn off start up's through ccleaner which is a really good disc and registry cleaner that can help to speed up your system also.

thanks, am checking that site closer, was all over internet this week re trojans/ will go back to bleeping..
the following list (thru services gui) are what jumped out as might be un-needed.  if concur or see anything that jumps out (compared to site you gave, hope not trojans, will check more/ had scanned with:  sbsd, mbam, sas, swb, avast)  spybot, malwarebytes, super anti-spyware, spyware blaster..

I just saw that I also have spybotSD.exe (download helper) running resident, no conflict there?

initial review:
if not part of services (computer management gui), already off:  ctfmon, dns, messenger, now: auto updates, spooler)
went to msconfig (question on:  MAIL, not used/ research if can/ will let turn off).
went thru services one at a time.  items below one's left with question if need.

SERVICES:  (do these need to always be on/ manual allows as needed?)
automatic updates (have had off forever anyways, did set to manual/ stopped)  bc.com: TROJAN? (algs.exe not running in task manager)

help and support   ???   cannot tell by: (bc) bleepingcomputer.com
hid input service   ???   TROJAN? (bc.com: not exactly listed, hid.exe not running in my TM)
spooler         turned off   (ck:
telephony      man   what ??   (not listed bc.com)
terminal services   man   ???   (not listed bc.com)
windows time      auto   TROJAN? (only search pc did:  winmgr.exe not present, these may be legit..? not running in TM, will follow up)

- thanks

help and support cannot tell by: (bc) bleepingcomputer.com -leave on manual
hid input service TROJAN? (bc.com: not exactly listed, hid.exe not running in my TM) -dont know
spooler turned off (ck: - if your not using printer leave off
telephony man what ?? (not listed bc.com) - dont know
terminal services man (not listed bc.com) - dont know
windows time auto TROJAN? (only search pc did: winmgr.exe not present, these may be legit..? not running in TM, will follow up) - leave your time on auto. If you cant find what something is, it is best off to leave it alone. Delet the spybot stuff. If auto update's are for windows update i would leave on.

I agree with what craigb says

I would upgrade the system RAM as that is the best and cheapest way to improve system performance.
When I upgraded my XP Pro system to 1.5GB RAM it really improved its performance.
