When I load Avast can I disable Norton or do I have to uninstall it ?
I am a beginner so this may sound like a stupid question .

Hi Elizabeth, welcome to the forums.

You will have to uninstall Norton if its the NAV 2003 or 2004, they don't mix very well. It can cause a conflict having two AV programs running in XP, NT or W2K at the same time.

Norton can also be a bit of a pig to get rid of, leaving behind remnants that can still interfere with the installation of avast.

I would suggest that you download RejZor's avast! External Control program, this has a tool to remove the remnants of NAV 2004 after an uninstall. There are also a number of other useful tools to interface with avast.

Since both Avast and Norton are resident scanners (which means they run all the time), only one can be active on your computer or they will severly conflict.

Norton MUST be fully uninstalled or Avast will not work.

You can search this forum using "Norton" as the criteria for advice on how to completely remove Norton.  It is not as easy as you may think.
Norton really embeds itself in the Registry (which controls the computer) and computer functions.

If you need help or run into trouble, come back here and ask for help.
One of us will assist you.

Good luck

I thought Windows XP came with it's own unzipper.

Liz,

Just double click on the file and see if your computer has a Zip utility installed.

If not, you can download a few different free ones such as QuickZip, ZipIt etc from:]

www.wantdbest.com
www.snapfiles.com

As Staind has said, normally Windows has a zip utility installed as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer installed)

Good luck

Hi Elizabeth, yes you must un-install NAV 2003-4 or it will cause a conflict  with AVAST,i should know i had this problem with AVAST, it might not load up or get disabled from the TOOLBAR or just not run at all, also it showed up in the XP SP2 SECURITY CONTROL CENTRE as me having no VIRUS PROTECTION!,this was after i downloaded and installed AVAST 4.0!,as i have red since you cannot have 2 AVs running at the same time, and disabling NAV makes no difference at all, must UNINSTALL. ::)

BEST REGARDS

Do you use WinXP ? The AEC is packed in a standard (ok its a bit optimized :) ) but still standard Deflate ZIP archive. WinXP internal unzipper should open it easily.
