IE9 Installation?
« on: October 12, 2010, 06:46:27 PM »
Hi there,

While trying to install IE9 after running the setup it stalls at “Downloading required updates” despite the AV being disabled……any clues?

Regards!

OS: W7 Pro 32bit.

Protection:  Avast 12.3 Free, MBAM.

nothing to do with avast, it probably happens off an on with IE9 beta installer as it happened with Windows Live Essentials beta, just reboot, clean your temp files, and try again. This said I've had the issue with wle beta, but not with ie9.

IE9 needs UAC turned on to download and install

Turn it off afterwards

Granted UAC is weird on Vista but turning it off is not recommended.  ;)

I did not have to disable avast! to have IE9 install.

sounds right http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/InternetExplorer/thread/c62eedcf-9f52-4952-b259-a2944c1f17e7 ... had no idea as I got UAC constantly turned on. This said I wouldn't advise to turn UAC off to an Internet Explorer user, as UAC conditions "protected mode" there. For all the rest, I admit that UAC is a matter of personal choice, and not a must be.

When I said "turn it off afterwards" I was speaking to people who had it turned off anyway.
I was  not saying it's a good idea

Don't Shut Off Vista UAC, There's A Better Way

Posted by David DeJean, Jun 11, 2007 04:57 PM

One of the most annoying things about Microsoft Windows Vista is User Account Control and all the warnings it pops up to ask if you just did something you really wanted to do. Like, either (a) it wasn't you who pressed the Enter key, but the ghost of your grandfather standing at your shoulder, or (b) you really are too stupid to be trusted to know you want to install a program or open an attachment. The temptation is strong to turn off UAC warnings by disabling the controls, but that causes more problems, like making it even more difficult to do some things in Vista. Fortunately, there's a better way.

He's probably right, but the problem is you need a Ph.D. in Vista to figure out how to set the switch.
One of the reasons I decided to skip Vista.  ;)

This is what I used on Vista - keep the UAC on but moderates it so it only asks once and remembers
