Both McAfee & Symantec (Norton) are listed in that Highjackthis log. Could that be your problem?    ???

Well... I don't remember having installed McAffee and certainly not Norton !
Besides, no installation whatsoever was performed before Avast suddently refuses to launch.

They are in the DPf section. Most likely placed there during a online scan on those websites.

Pierre, have a look in both the system and event log. Take any error(s) there to the MS-Knowledgbase and google and solve them.

I am on Win XP. I don't have a "my computer" icon. In the system panel, I didn't find anything that look like a system or an event log.

Oups.   :-[

On a standard XP system it is not. But you can show it on the desktop. But anyway it is normally in the start menu

Both of you try this:

1] Disable system restore. (INFO)
2] Reboot
3] Uninstall Avast using THIS util
4] Reboot
5] Login as administrator (INFO)
6] Install Avast

While doing this, keep an eye open for ANY strange thing. Let us know what happens.
