Same problem here.  This has happened to me twice in the past month.  The second time, I actually got the red X in the avast icon in system tray.  I also got an avast screen that said avast had stopped and offered two buttons, a 'fix' button and a 'start' button.  I tried both and they made the computer hang.  I managed to end the processes.

I tried to repair, but when I opened control panel, there were no icons!
I tried to reboot, but the computer would not shut down.

I finally hit the reset button on the computer and rebooted.  I was then able to do a repair through control panel and somehow mysteriously, able to reboot. That was yesterday.  This morning, booting up, all seems well.
It seems like the second update yesterday caused problems for me?
Scans with avast, MBAM,and SAS showed nothing.

???????

Try doing what I did.  Try a clean installation.  I had the same problem on both my computers and tried a clean installation on my laptop and all works fine.  I am about to do that on my  desktop.  I need to run a full scan on my computers though just to be safe :D

You guys may wish to try it.

Heres a guide to Full Reinstall.

1. Uninstall Avast! and restart
2. Download this http://public.avast.com/~forejt/aswClear.exe
3. Then download these Softwares
CCLEANER:
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard
DISK DEFRAG:
http://download.cnet.com/Auslogics-Disk-Defrag/3000-2094_4-10567503.html?part=dl-6267754&subj=dl&tag=button
4. After installing this, run the ASWCLEAR.exe and restart
5. After Restart, run CCLEANER - You will see to the left there is TAPS. Look for "REGISTRY" Now, clean up Registry(BACK IT UP BEFORE CLEANING IT - CCLEANER WILL ASK YOU FOR BACKING REGISTRY UP - DO THIS - SAVE THE BACKUP IN A NEW FOLDER)
6. Now run Auslogics Disk Defrag - This will clean your system up(look for errors etc) but also speed your PC up.
7. Restart
8. Reinstall Avast!

Report back if any issues. ;)

Could windows defender be the problem?

My install of avast was a clean one, BTW.
For now, things are working.

Windows Defender is not necessary on XP.

I noticed a slowdown with definition updates this morning.

A full reinstall for what jay21317 reported is overkill first start with and avast repair.
- Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual virus definitions version.

Reboot after this if you still see an out of sequence reporting of VPS version.

???????

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but this happened to me again! (what I have in quotes).
It only seems to happen when there is an update available, but this morning there was an update and no problem.  I don't get it.

I had nothing checked in the settings/update even though I'm on broadband.
I'm going to change this to 'always connected to the internet' and add the line 'AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120' to the .ini file and see if that makes any difference.
Otherwise, reinstall or try another AV.

I've been using avast since version 5 and this is the first problem I've had.

There is no need to defrag people. I honestly think people should explore simpler alternatives before jumping to defrag or anything on a large scale.

All you need to do is simply wait for some time, because there is a temporary problem with the server, and should be fixed. I had this problem yesterday.

Anyways, if you want, I can manually upload the files that you need.

What I need from you is to tell me which of the .vpx files you need and I will tell you how to manually put them in the Avast folder in you system drives.
