Web shield suddenly won't start
« on: October 28, 2010, 07:27:26 PM »
Been searching the net high and low and can't find any help.  Windows vista  Avast Version 5.0.677 webshield won't start.  It gives an error about mail and news are not protected with a 10106 error code.  Did several scans no virus on machine.  Anyone have any ideas??  Can forward more info if necessary.

Thanks
Rod

Just tried this with no change.  Also, uninstalled reinstall.  It works until the computer is rebooted after fresh install.

OK, I have a question. I've used Avast on both Windows 7 and XP. I never had a problem with version 4 and earlier. Now that I've upgraded to version 5, I (and apparently many others) are suddenly having this issue. The only course of action I have seen so far is to repair or uninstall/reinstall (which doesn't work for more than a few minutes, I might add...).

Could it just be possible that this is a bug in version 5? Just maybe? I mean, what if it isn't an incompatibility with other software? I've used Avast! along with Spybot, Windows Firewall, and others in the past with no issues and I have been using and recommending Avast for years. I find it hard to believe, both from my experience as a user of previous versions of Avast! and as someone who has been a programmer for the past 25+ years, that a mere version change would result in the sudden onset of the same problem across multiple computers and operating systems and it NOT be a bug in the code. Why now and why only this problem?

I just have to ask, because I feel like I am getting the run around and there really isn't any other descent free anti-virus software available. I am planning on upgrading to the Pro version, but not until this is fixed. I also can no longer recommend this software if it isn't going to work. Please figure out why this is happening and fix it. I guarantee it is in the code.

I just hope you guys don't think I am being argumentative; I am just extremely frustrated! Hopefully the problem is fixed in 5.1!

Yes, I used all the removal tools for avast.  I took Norton off with their uninstaller when I got this laptop 2 years ago.  5.0 has been working fine until this morning.  I also run it on 5 other computers in my home and probably 100 customer computers.  That's why this is strange.  I searched for that error message here and on the internet and found nothing.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hi rstandi (Rod) and welcome to the forum.  :)

You may want to try the WinsockFix Utility, which worked for some other users:

Windows XPhttp://majorgeeks.com/WinSock_XP_Fix_d4372.html

Vistahttp://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/18/repair-and-reset-windows-vista-tcpip-winsock-catalog-corruption/

Windows 7 http://windows7themes.net/winsock-fix-for-windows-7.html

Let me know if this helps.  Thank you.

No luck with this.  Does anyone from avast look at these forums?  I would think they might know the causes of this.  It says there's a firewall blocking.  Windows firewall is the only one on this machine.

Do you get the error message when you turn off the Mail shield?

The mail shield is always on.  It's actually the webshield that doesn't work.  That's why the error is so strange.

Please try the following:

To see if you have the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package installed on your machine, look in Add/Remove Programs to see if you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 or 2010 Redistributable Package listed (depending on your OS; you also may have several Packages as well).  If not, download the file (see below for links) and restart your machine.

When people are having trouble with Avast installs and similar, it could also be a dependency problem. Make sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed and updated BEFORE you attempt to install Avast.  Actually this is good general advice anyway, for maximum compatibility and in order to avoid problems with applications written in Visual C++ it is always a good idea to have all the C++ redistributables installed and fully updated.  Many programs require them to function properly; one important example is ATI drivers.  It is often seen when the installs went bad or were unable to install the drivers because of either missing or not updated C++ Redistributable Package.
