question on upgrade or switching to a different program
« on: November 09, 2010, 12:59:24 AM »
If a file goes to the quarantine, could that file still be used
by the operating system ?

What I am getting at is this.  If a file in quarantine can it still be used
(system file for example) and if you decide to upgrade avast to say the Pro
version, does it delete the quarantine files in the process.

Lets say your key is about ready to expire you want to go with the free
version, do you have to uninstall first or will the free version
install over the previous, preserving the quarantine files.

I wondered also what would happen if after a few years of using
a virus program and then deciding to try a different program.
What happens to all the quarantine files?

No, a file in the virus chest/quarantine will not be able to be used. That is the whole purpose of the virus chest/quarantine, to offer a place to store files in a safe environment. You can however, restore it (release it). Files inside will be deleted upon uninstallation of the program. You do not need to uninstall to renew the license or to upgrade. This can be done in the maintenance tab, registration.

You can also right-click the items in quarantine to rescan them to see if they are still infected, especially after Avast updates definitions this may change.  Generally, it is best to leave quarantined items in the Chest for several weeks to play it safe, but you can rescan it within the Chest...if it comes out clean and it is an essential file you can restore it.  If you do not need the file, then you can delete it.

After deleting, clean out your temp. Internet files or use a system cleaner like CCleaner - There is a Slim version available as well at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds.  It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.  It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.

In addition, also Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop.

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/
·   Please double-click TFC.exe to run it.  (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
·   It will close all programs when running, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
·   Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.  Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
·   Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
