OE SENT ITEMS - NOTHING!
« on: August 12, 2004, 10:35:14 PM »
Hello Everyone,

Using Avast 4.1 Home.  Incoming and outgoing scanning appears to work, but my outgoing messages are not being handed off to Outlook Express's "Sent Items" folder.

I have the option to keep a copy of sent messages checked in OE, but I wonder if I'm dealing with a bug or if I somehow mis-configured the Avast setup.

I have installed/un-installed twice and this is still happening.

Thanks for any help or tips.  Great forum!

Jay

Avast has nothing to do with where/how send items are stored, this is a OE problem. Are you sure you configured OE correctly?

Yes, I went through all the options, checked server names, etc.

Bob,

Thanks for the capture.  Everything indicated was already checked.

I even went back and did a restore to last Friday after uninstalling Avast! and I'm having the same problem.

This all started two days ago when I uninstalled Avast (subscription was up) and re-installed it.

Now Avast is off my system (temporarily) and the sent items problem remains.  I deleted the last week's worth of sent mails in the folder to see if there was an issue with space, but that didn't help.

As far as I know, there isn't anything in Avast! that has anything to do with either saving or not saving your replies.

In a possibly related issue...

Ever since installing Avast, OE would time out while sending larger files (over 2.5mB).  I'd get the SMTP server timeout dialog, even though a file was still uploading.  Clicking "Yes" to "Do you want to wait for your server to respond?" would re-send the file to the recipient once the current one was through uploading.

Bob (& Eddy),

Thanks for the quick responses; I'll do some more digging and just have to remember to cc myself on replies I want to keep for the moment.

JayFCatskills, this is not a error from Avast. It has to do with your ISP's mail server most likely. Basicly what happens is this:

1] You create a mail.
2] You click on send.
3] The mail server of your ISP receives this info.
4] OE is starting to send the mail after receiving a "ok" from the mail server
5] OE starts sending.
6] Avast notice this (if you have set 'scan outgoing mail) and starts scanning
7] The mail server is waiting.
8] The mail server does not get a response within a (defined time by your ISP) time.
9] The server thinks something is wrong and gives the time-out error.

One solution is to disable the outgoing-mail scanning. While Avast is scanning the mail, the server is waiting for a response. The larger the mail is, the more time it takes for Avast to scan it. Very logical. But the mail server is inpatient  :-\ and doesn't want to wait that " long". So it generates a error.

Eddy,

Thanks for walking me through the steps.  Makes complete sense (and thankfully it's unrelated to this current dilemma).

If I ever discover what happened, I'll footnote this thread.

Thanks again for being here.

No problem, we all have to learn and I happen to be someone who is working with comps for over 24 years and I am still learning  ;) And although I am not a "teacher" I am doing my best to help others if I can. I remember the time when I could use some help, even if it was no exactly accurate, and was happy to receive any information  ;)

You can also change the time delay in you OE settings
Go to Tools then Accounts then select your default account and select Properties
The rest is on the picture.

Good thinking Bob!!! It's been a very long time ago since I used OE. So I forgot about that.
