Am I Secured or Unsecured ???
« on: November 14, 2010, 10:20:04 PM »
Hi.

I have recently installed and started using Avast Free Antivirus (5.0.677) on my XP machine.

The top of the user interface screen is Green and states ..."SECURED - your system is fully protected".

The Ball icon at the bottom of the screen is Orange and not Red.

BUT when I hover the mouse over it, a message appears saying ..."Avast! Antivirus: WARNING, your system is unsecured".

So am I Secured or Unsecured ?   And why am I being told two conflicting things ?

Thanks.
David

Did you reboot the machine after installation?

How did you remove the previous antivirus?

What happens if you fix this? There should be a prompt available to take the steps required to fix it. This could be enabling one or more shields, or updating the database.

Another thing to try in the absence of the pointers above giving a clue:
1) Check your system date and time is correct,
2) Go to "add/remove programs" in the control panel, select Avast, then "change" then "repair".

If you kept the set-up package you can use the set-up to repair the software.
1) open set-up
2) click repair
3) make sure the virus definitions are up to date v.101114-0
Dell Inspiron, Win10x64--HP Envy Win10x64--Both systems Avast Free v17.9.2322, Comodo Firewall v8.2 w/D+, MalwareBytes v3.0, OpenDNS, Super Anti-Spyware, Spyware Blaster, MCShield, Unchecky, Vivaldi Browser and, various browser security tools.

Trying to repair it from Add/Remove programs didn't do anything.
The system time & date were ok.

I really can't remember if I re-booted or not after installation.

So ... I have uninstalled and re-installed and now re-booted.

And now both displays are showing as SECURED - so hopefully it's all sorted now.

Many thanks for all your help.

You're welcome, and welcome to the forum. :)

What AV were you using before Avast? Reason I ask is that in many cases it's necessary to run a tool to completely remove them. The vestiges leftover can (and often do) interfere.

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon.

I have just switched on today and once again the top of the user interface screen is Green and states ..."SECURED - your system is fully protected".  And the Ball icon at the bottom of the screen is Orange and not Red.  BUT when I hover the mouse over it, a message appears saying ..."Avast! Antivirus: WARNING, your system is unsecured".

There is never any FIX NOW option on the interface.  I have run a full scan - and nothing is found.  I don't believe that the system is unsecure - I just think the message by the ball icon is inconsistent and WRONG !

Tarq57, in answer to your question - I was previously using Norton Antivirus.  Before installing Avast, I used the latest Norton Removal Tool . . . TWICE (as recommended by Norton themselves).

I really thought that Avast would just provide a solid, easy, fault-free AV solution, but now I am left wondering whether to return to the awful Norton . . . at least it didn't keep telling me my system was UNSECURE when it isn't !!!

Any further help would be appreciated.

Thanks, but that's all good.  Windows Security Centre says that Avast is working and up to date.

Just for information . . . . I also installed Avast at the same time on my Vista laptop, but that seems to be running perfectly - it only seems to have this fault on the XP machine.

No problem on my XP Pro system.  8)

Are you using XP Home or Pro and how much RAM does the system have?

YoKenny . . . I think you might just be a genius !!!

Looks like that might have got me sorted now.  Actually, now I think about it, it did look like Avast was ok for a second or two when first booting up, before it then started to give out those conflicting displays.

Well, I'll leave it for a bit and see what happens.

Thanks a lot.
