Well... avast!5's protection against zero-day malware is not better than 4.8's.
I feel the same.
Although there should have some improvements, not a real movement toward zero-day protection yet.

All AV's let stuff through and the worst culprits in my experience are AVG, McAfee, Norton and Trend.  On the malware forum where I work I find Avast to be among the lowest frequenters(?) of the service

We are not alone with our opinion.

AVAST Software put some improvements into v5.0 engine and definitions, but in real life, its detection is not better.

As I said before, I read more positive comments and post 1-2 years ago than now.

But now AVG has a new version, v2011

And that is even worse, plus it stops a lot of malware removal tools working.  To run combofix on an infected system with AVG 2011 we have to uninstall it first

I like avast, but it seems it is weaker than others.

Spend the one time fee for Malwareytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) and your system will be protected with Website Blocking as well plus automatic updates and scan sheduling.

Tell all avast users that they must have other on-access scanner with avast unless they will become infected.
While it's a good idea to have backup scanners, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a must. I scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware on occasion and neither one has ever found anything. Also, the chances of you encountering true zero-day malware before the major security vendors can detect it are probably less than 1/10 of 1%.

In my computer, ESET Online Scanner found 7 infected files - to be honest, not only avast!, but MBAM missed them, too.

Can you upload the files to www.virustotal.com and post back the links of the results?

I uploaded them to VirusTotal, but unfortunately, I forgot the results.
It was about three months ago.

Some of them (e.g. the infected UnLocker installer) are submitted to avast via chest.

I like avast, but it seems it is weaker than others.
I think the good combination is a firewall, an antivirus and an on-demand scanner. But if somebody's av is avast, it is sometimes not enough.

I use only the free version of MBAM to scan my system sometimes.

Which as I have said on a number of occasions, you have to go by your own personal experience and not arbitrary test, which in many cases don't reflect real-time user experience.

If it doesn't meet your needs and you are 'disappointed and of course sad,' then you can choose another AV, but constantly complaining about it achieves nothing, take action and switch if you are 'disappointed and of course sad.'

The same is true no matter what AV you choose, it won't give 100% protection so a multi-application approach is wise for all, not just avast.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security
