I know, just posted as a "heads up" knowing the problems SP1 caused initially.

I'm not against anyone updating (might even do it myself later) I just think it's best to make an informed choice and be aware of any possible problems.

Personally, I think this update is more of a "knee jerk reaction" to the recent bad press about Windows security, rather than a well thought out update. Possibly the ad men wanted a face saving gesture first, hence some of the problems with Microsofts own programmes after the update.

Hasten to add, that the above is merely a personal opinion not a "knock" against Microsoft. I'll keep those for when I'm logged into Mandrake 10 and the forums I use there!

People, you have to understand that there is no 100% secure OS, and it will never be. Every single time someone comes up with something revolutionary, there will be some new kids on the block trying to prove that it's not so secure as everyone thinks it is... hackers don't know what "vacation" word means...

It will always be like that. If something strange happens, and we destroy all Windows instances in the world... and we all have to switch to Linux... what do you think, that will solve our security problems ? Aha... I'm sure it wouldn't last more than one month, we would see so many people reporting some new flaws... why ? Because it's modern to attack something that is current and used by millions... it's never-ending story, and any further discussion is useless... we can talk like this forever.

Hi all you Conservative guys,
I really needed this support for my decision to wait; MS put the message on my computer that SP2 is ready to be downloaded , etc.

Some people say they have downloaded it but have not installed it , intending to wait and see.
I wonder if that would work on my machine; if I should go ahead and let it download, would it not automatically install?

Depends how your Auto-Update is set up. If you check it, there's 3 options:

1) Download and install automatically;
2) Download automatically, and advise you there's an download ready to install;
3) Advise you there's a new download available.

I use #3 myself, so I've got better control, or think I do. In #2 and #3 you can decline to accept the new whatever, and if it's already been downloaded then it'll be deleted from your system. (You can go back and get it again later, if you change your mind.)

That is the way I have mine set up; I just wonder if MS is going to keep bugging me about downloading SP2 now that it has announced it is ready to download.

If they announced it's ready, then it's ready... however, I'm sure we will see some patches in the future, so I guess it's normal when we talk about Windows. There is nothing inside SP2 that you should affraid of. I said to myself that I will wait as long as I can, but I decided to install it on my spare system just to test it. It works peerfect without any single glitch. I couldn't find any of those programs installed on that system having problems with SP2, and believe me there is bunch of different programs, from graphical applications, designing software, music composers to professional dtp software... Few days ago, I installed it on my primary PC and I'm so happy everything works great...

I feel the same - just what I read because it's not released in my language yet - but, a sad point: 840Mb of HDD will be 'eated' by SP2, ie, the difference of free disk before and after installing SP2...

Technical,
A lot of that space is all the back-up files that are stored. If it wasn't such a pain in the a**, I'd do a slipdisk install of the operating system including SP2. The pain is that all the programs that have stuff burried in the windows folder would have to be re-installed.
Besides I still have lot's of free HD space.

I read that SP2 will have an option to 'hide' the hotfixes into Add/Remove program.
Will it let all uninstall folders into Windows subdirectory?
Before SP2, you can zip all of them and store it in a CD... It's not common have to uninstall any hotfix anyway...

If I totally start from scratch, I'd get rid of the windows directory and do a new install. Doing an install on top of what's already there, wouldn't get rid of anything. It would prob. make it worse.
