Installed Avast & My Scroll Mouse Doesn't Work
« on: August 16, 2004, 02:58:58 PM »
Hello All,

I recently installed Avast! 4.1 Home Edition, Build 4.1.418.  It was the only change made to my machine (Windows XP Home Edition), since then the scroll button on my mouse doesn't work.

On some pages it looks like it is going to work, but only has "jerky" effects on the page.

Is there anything I can do to fix this behavior?  Change a setting?  Edit an .ini file?  Anything?

Other than this one small problem, I am loving Avast!.  :D

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Geek, wellcome to avast forums...
Quite strange problem  ::)
I've never heard this before. avast has nothing to do with mouse drivers...
Can you reconfigure your mouse through Control Panel?

Jerking effects 'could' be related to scanning jobs...  :-\
How stressed are your system when this occurs? Are too many programs opened, CPU is almost fully used...

Hi Technical,

Thank you for the welcome and for your response.

I agree, this is a strange problem and one I would like to get fixed.

I have checked the settings for my mouse in the control panel and everything is as it should be.

The only program I have running when this occurs is my browser.  I have tested the mouse wheel on all of my browsers, one at a time, and it does the same thing for each one.  My CPU Usage is normal, nothing other than the scroll mouse seems to be affected.

Does it help when you disable the resident protection of avast!
If not, does it help when you uninstall avast?

It's really strange... I don't know how avast! could influence your mouse. What type of mouse is it, anyway?

Did you check device manager for errors?
Did you reinstall the mouse drivers?
Did you try the mouse on another system?

I'm not sure if it is related, but my mouse jumped the first week of installing avast.  ONLY when I was using a browser to scroll down the page with the scroll wheel.  It went away and I've had no problems since.

>> Did you check device manager for errors? <<

Yes, there are none.

>> Did you reinstall the mouse drivers? <<

Yes and it did not help.

>> Did you try the mouse on another system? <<

Yes and it works perfectly on it.

>> Does it help when you disable the resident protection of avast! <<

I tried and that didn't work either.

>>  does it help when you uninstall avast? <<

This was going to be my next step, but I thought I would post here and see if this was a known issue before going that route.  I will give it a try if no one has a solution for me before I am able to get to it (I work long hours).

That is exactly what is happening here, only sometimes it doesn't jump - it just doesn't do anything at all.  It will probably be a week before I can work on my system again, so hopefully this problem will have resolved itself in that time.  I will keep you posted.

Thank you all for your replies.

Thank you for the welcome, CharleyO.  ;D

Ooops!  I forgot to tell you that I have a regular ole PS/2 mouse with a scroll wheel.  It's the original mouse that came with my HP computer.

I have now uninstalled Avast ( :( ) and my scroll wheel still isn't working.  There were a few entries in the registry that wouldn't delete after the uninstall.  Is there a clean-up tool I could run to remove these?

I will have a little time to work on this today (not much), so if anyone has any suggestions for me, I would sure appreciate it.

Beautiful, Bob!  That is exactly what I was looking for, thank you.

Great uninstall utility, it couldn't have been simpler.

Unfortunately, I am still left with the registry entries that I wasn't able to delete myself.  I took two screenshots of said entries.......as you may have guessed, my mouse still won't scroll while using the mouse wheel.  I am getting really bummed. :(

Geek ... it may be time for a new mouse!

... or the old mouse may need re-calibrating.    ???

Hiya geek, with your browser open, if you use the up/down arrows on your keyboard to scroll, is it ok?
