Abbreviation for Behavior Shield. Which one do you want?
« on: December 10, 2010, 01:42:28 PM »
You know, the acronym BS could bring up funny things in our minds  ;D
How should we call the Behavior Shield?

In the poll, you can choose two names.

The origin of the name: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=46324.msg388941#msg388941  :)

This is a BS poll ;D, i think it would be best to leave it at what everyone already recognises the behaviour shield abbreviation as which is BS :)

As sure as eggs are eggs people will abbreviate it as it is just too long for common usage. The problem abbreviations can be terrible as they aren't common knowledge. Or worse when there are many different meanings for a given abbreviation.

I Hate BS (but have used on occasion) as BS is a very common American term for Bull S*1t, so the association will always be there.

Bhs = British Home Stores a British (obviously) retail store and this is what I will always associate with Bhs. http://www.bhs.co.uk/

So for me BehavS or BhvS in that order as they don't have a common usage with multiple meanings.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Not all things should or need to be abbreviated.  :)

Thanks David. I was not aware about previous abbreviations for the ones I've proposed.
Hope other users make these considerations also.

David's view echoes what I would have posted...though I forgot about bhs ;D

So for me it would probably be one of the last two...that said, I will probably just end up writing BS out of lazyness... ;)

BeS and BehavS are actually my choice.
Why? I think it's a easier way to specify the name of the shield.
BS it's too simple...  :-\

;D ;D ;D At first, that's what I thought people meant when they said BS.

Edit: I voted for BhS, but how about BSh? :P

Yep I'm up for BSH.
But on the other hand,I have always used BS and have never thought about erroneous implications to anything other then an Avast Real Time Shield.
Hey, but thats just me ;) Whatever,as long as it communicates what is meant.

The problem with abbreviations is that they are always understood by the person using them and,
guessed at by all others reading them.
The unabbreviated version is always understood by all.

Having thought about this now for more than 5 minutes (I know, my attention span is truly awesome, isn't it? ;D) I voted "other".

Tech, if we really have to have a standardized abbreviation, I suggest 'BSh' (or 'BSH', 'bsh' - for the one-finger typists) because,
(a) it seems the most unambiguously understandable, and
(b) it alludes to the avast! 4.x file shield name 'ash' with which some of us are already familiar.

If Behavior Shield was 'BSh'
File Shield could be 'FSh'
Mail Shield 'MSh'
Web Shield 'WSh'
P2P Shield 'PSh'
IM Shield 'ISh'
Network Shield 'NSh'
Script Shield 'SSh'
Virtualization (Shield) 'VSh'

What about two finger typists ???
