avast! 4.8 updates no longer incremental?

The last few times I've updated a machine running 4.8, the entire database has been downloaded. Just curious as to whether incremental updates are still being deployed.

It should be incremental updates.  Did you at some point download the entire database for some reason?

No. In the most recent case (today) it was an auto-update on a machine which had not been switched on for a few weeks.

When you say you "updated" a machine using 4.8, you still have 4.8 on the machine...correct?  But you still got the ENTIRE database?  That is odd.

Have you considered updating to 5.0.677 since the support for 4.0 will discontinue very soon?  Perhaps this will solve your problems.

I don't have any problems with using 4.8 on Windows 98.
Trying 5.0.677... that would be a problem.

Yes, that could be a problem.

For your situation now, you may try to do an Avast Repair to see if it fixes your problem:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.

If this does not work, then perhaps an uninstall and clean install might be needed.

That's the reason - if the machine wasn't switched on for a long time, the sum of all the incremental updates may be bigger than downloading the whole package. In that case, the program downloads the whole package indeed.

I got the impression that the number of increments might have been reduced, so that it would be more likely that a large/full update would be needed after a shorter time.

Just updated from 101216-1 to 101217-0 on my own old W95OSR2. Must have just been the length time between updates.
