Avast 5 fails to load- "vcredist_x86_sp1.exe"

Basically my problem is that whenever i go to install Avast! the bar becomes fully green as if the set up is completed, but i got a messaged on the install screen saying
"vcredist_x86_sp1.exe"

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 1545 64 - bit OS. Previously I had Avast 4 running with no problems but cannot get this to load. I have removed Avast 4 using the avast removal tool and also the current Avast 5 partial install.

That file is the 32 bit version of the C++ redistributable and will not work in a 64 bit OS. What you need to do is completely uninstall Avast!, then download the 64 bit version of the C++ 2008 redistributable from the Microsoft download center. Install that and then reinstall Avast!. Everything should be fine after that.

To see if you have the Package installed on your machine, look in Add/Remove Programs to see if you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package listed.  If not, download the file (see below for links) and restart your machine. 

When people are having trouble with Avast installs and similar it could also be a dependency problem. Make sure you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed and updated BEFORE you attempt to install Avast.  Actually this is good general advice anyway, for maximum compatibility and in order to avoid problems with applications written in Visual C++ it is always a good idea to have all the C++ redistributables installed and fully updated.  Many programs require them to function properly; one important example is ATI drivers.  It is often seen when the installs went bad or were unable to install the drivers because of either missing or not updated C++ Redistributable Package.

You can also install the first link, then go to "Windows Updates" to see what other updates you are missing and they will be installed for you.  I suggest you do this PRIOR to reinstalling Avast.

How to uninstall and do a clean install of Avast:

1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.677) for the product you need and save it to your HDD:

2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD.
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.  Uninstall BOTH 4.0 and 5.0 at this time.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.

9. Update the Avast definitions.

I have tried your suggestion- twice now and still get the same problem where the setup freezes at the vcredist_86_sp1.exe screen. I am running the install as administrator-Do you have any other suggestions please?

Hi,

I have tried checking that vcredist is installed and updated correctly and it appears to be so but I still cannot load Avast without it sticking at this screen. I have now uninstalled the avast 5 install and gone back to v4.8 which loaded with no problems. I have also tried to load a "Kodak all-in-one printer' software and had a similar problem with it freezing up so I think I must have a Windows 7 issue which needs addressing. Any other suggestions on how to work this out would be greatly appreciated.

Did you remember to check Add/remove Programs (or the similar in W7) to see if ... Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64) ... was there?

But issue was not fixed again someone may have the same trouble

Just because the OP never replied doesn't mean there issue wasn't fixed and there has well and truely been enough time for a response,  if someone did happen to have this sort of problem again they should start a new thread as the versions of avast are outdated compaired to this topic and avast should also not be installed in safe mode

One more time to end this. Avast is supposed to install the needed C++ files automatically but sometimes it fails to do so. If you are having this problem, uninstall Avast, download and install the C++ 2008 and 2010 redistributables, make sure they are current through Windows update, and then reinstall Avast from scratch and it will work.
