Please read:

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean31

XP SP2 is very down level and SP3 has been available for XP for almost 2 years and has many Critical Updates and performance enhancements.

Welcome to the forums, FranG   :)

Are you the system administrator?

Was it you that installed avast?

Yep.  I'm administrator and only user.  I installed 5.0.677 over 4.8.  There were no apparent problems except I had to remove some 4.8 registry entries (setup log shows sharing violation) and it got the same ScRegSetValueExW errors.  That was before the SelfDef log was created, but there wasn't anything else running that would have blocked a registry change.

Is there supposed to be a FailureAction entry for the services?  Some have it, some don't.  The Avast entries don't.

Thanks,
Fran

I am also the administrator and only user of my computer. I also installed 5.0 over 4.8 but I do not have those entries in my avast log. So, I can be of no help.

If avast is working correctly, I would not worry about it.
