Avast 5 won't update
« on: December 30, 2010, 11:38:18 PM »
Just installed Avast on XP Home but it won't update def files. When I try to manually update it says already up to date but after rebooting I get the red avast warning saying I need to update.

I've reinstalled Windows & avast twice now and problem persists

Avast program version: 5.0.677
Virus Definitions: 101011-1

thanks
ranaw

Hey.
Which version of Avast! are you using?
What firewall are you using?
Firewall can be blocking the updates... view this here: https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=319

You can also try an offline update... Download and information here: http://www.avast.com/download-update

I've been using Avast on XP home SP3 for years and firewall has never blocked updates in the past. And it's Windows firewall. This is definitely an avast problem as every other program I've installed has worked fine.

have you tried avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

How to install Windows:
1)install the OS
2)install motherboard drivers
3)install other drivers
4)install firewall (if you do not have a hardware firewall)
5)install av software
Do ALL they above BEFORE going online!
6)get ALL security updates and patches.

Windows(XP) firewall is NOT a real firewall.
It only checks incomming traffic, not outgoing.
Get yourself a hardware firewall.

Is it really avast that gives you the message or is it the windows security?
Have you told windows you have your own av installed?

I ran the avast removal tool, downloaded a fresh copy of avast and everything is working now.

I've been running avast since Jesus was a lance corporal and never had a problem like that before. Oh well.

Appreciate everyone's trying to help.
