updated the "free" version on my wife's laptop from 5.0 to 5.1, process went fine except that the behavior shield doesn't scan anything (it's also a W7/64 system). I might do a new install from scratch there tomorrow.

why the copyrights didn't change to 2011??? LOL

Cause it was compiled/released shortly before ;)
It will be changed in the next version, don't worry (well, at least I hope I won't forget :))

just to correct something, I sent a behavior shield log (the one found on C: root) to Vlk earlier yesterday, and it wasn't relevant at all...'cause I'm seeing now that it was created on Dec 30 and not 31. Probably happened with .857, ie the problematic behavior shield build on 64 bit OS, solved after that.

You can simply add the file in question to the File System Shields exceptions. That will solve the issue for you.
I use several programs based on BASS, and I'm always getting updated files for each program.
The exclusions workaround is just not a very good solution.
