I reinstalled the latest version.
This time it is even worse.
Not only does it freeze when scanning but after 1/2 hour of inactivity it freezes by itself and i have to reboot to be able to use the computer.

That's what I was saying, this only confirms my hypothesis that it's related to the rootkit scan. There will be a workaround for this in the next VPS update tonight.

Thanks
Vlk

Thanks.
Please what is VPS short for.Excuse my ignorance

Whilst this issue doesn't affect me, I did check for updates, but currently mine is reporting 110101-0 is already up to date. So it isn't quite ready.

Edit: Confirmed that this VPS update is now available.

Freezes on my Xp32bit system, only the laptop, working fine on my x64 Windows 7 and my other Desktop which is also 32bit, i will try the suggestion VLK to run a scan without antirookit though

Custom scan with antirookit off--scanned fine, no threats found, tried Preconfigured Full System scan with latest VPS update and clean install on the Laptop XP 32bit system, and it froze on the first file, rebooting the machine now, and gonna just wait til it updates again and fix it that way, got a few more PC's to update here and will test those as well

Thank you all

P.S. on the XP 32 bit laptop machine froze on the Pre Configured Full System Scan right at C:\Windows\svchost.exe

Since unchecking "Enable rootkit Scan on System Startup" my computer has not frozen
The VPS update is not available yet,so i can't run a scan.
I will report back after installing the update.

Since installing the latest VPS i was able to run a "Quick Scan" without any problems.
I have not tried to run a scan with "Enable Rootkit Scan" checked
That's an exercise for tomorrow.

I have similar problem in notebook with xp home 32 bit sp3.
Quick scan is OK, freeze during full scan.
I followed the advice to disable antirootkit and used custom scan with harddisk & start-up, it was OK.
However, usually 3-4 hours (sometimes 2 hours) after starting the computer, the computer will freeze.
I suspect that Avast auto scan some files and automatically freeze when it encountered some problems. (the Avast icon was moving frequently).

When I did full scan, my computer usually freeze after scanning 10.6-10.8G data, and everytime it has a record in the log that a zip file "xxxxx.zip" cannot be scanned. Hence, I suspect that when Avast scan encounters some problems in scanning, it will freeze.

Please advice whether there is any solution to this problem.
