Acronis Disk Director does not make full disk copy as far I remember.
Acronis True Image perhaps, but it's an image not a partition restore.
Ghost... I have shame to say I've used a Symantec product

I switched all my image type backup from Acronis to Macrium Reflect http://www.macrium.com/default.asp , http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp The free version does only full backups, but has the usual restore and browse capabilities.  You can also choose whether to copy the unused sectors or only those actually used by the file system.  It seems much faster than Acronis also.

@Tech: OK i see i still didn't quite understand you, you are talking about cloning here... I'm gonna have to get a bit technical then.  

BTW what is wrong with making a full image hdd backup(all of your 6 partitions) and storing it onto your external drive ? That way you will only have one image file to store. When you restore it back to your 250gb drive it will obviously restore all 6 partitions(and the MBR of course).

Don't understand why you want to clone your 250GB HDD onto your 640GB one, yes of course it will delete the whole disk(and it always will) since it is a CLONE you are trying to make. Let me explain it to you... When you make a clone of your HDD it literally makes a clone of everything, what that means is that all the data from the hdd is copied into the clone INCLUDING the partition table layout. Do you see where i am going ? When you copy that clone to another HDD it will also re-arrange the partition table on that drive to be exactly the same as on the original source drive so that means it will destroy the previous partition table layout. It's perfectly logical. That is why it is reffered to as a clone. It is an exact copy.

Also Acronis Disk Director has a disc cloning option, of course it has it. When did it not have it ?

@sded: I like Macrium but the last time i tried it, made a restore USB but it was based on some old linux core and it didn't support my hdd's properly(running AHCI mode here). I will give it another try though, maybe they improved the restore CD/USB...

Macrium says in their forum  they have no problems supporting AHCI mode, but I haven't tried it.

The file could get corrupt. All the backup is lost.
Cloning is much more safe imho and personal experience.

What about a semi-clone then?
I mean, the partition table shouldn't be cloned.
I mean, clone but not delete the full contents of the destination driver.
See, I can do partition to partition and the result is the same.

Afraid that the backup image get's corrupted AND the original files which are on 2 different hdd's ??! lol sorry but this made me laugh...  You could make backups of your backup on a 3rd HDD i guess then lol

Laugh? Did you lost everything once in your life? Yes, I've lost a full disk image... Had to reinstall everything, restore the files from other backups, it was a mess. It's not for laugh but for crying.
