Incompatability with rocketdock?
« on: January 03, 2011, 01:59:57 PM »
Hi, I've just recently installed avast 5.1.864 and i found in this new version every time i start up with rocketdock, it locks up my system and makes rocketdock unable to respond, if i disable either avast or rocketdock everything loads up fine.

Have you tried to restart it from All Programs, etc.

You could try adding it to the Real-Time Shields, Behaviour Shield, Expert Settings, Trusted processes, see image (which is for XP Pro, so you would have to navigate to your location).

I have tried adding it to the trusted processes like you have recommended and i have also tried adding rocketdock's program file folder to exclusion to the file shield. i have tried restarting many times, nothing changes each time. in case you are wondering I'm using windows xp home edition.

Well I'm using XP Pro and aside from this morning RocketDock has worked flawlessly through the beta trial and the initial release of 5.1.764. All I did this morning was to manually start the program.

Are you getting any errors displayed or are there any windows event log entries ?

Ok i found an error for when i start up rocketdock and avast together. it is posted below in the .txt file, seems to look like when both are loading up, something stops a bunch of drivers from loading

I'm not sure what to make of the event viewer info as I though that the Aavmker4.sys was related to late versions of avast 4.x and avast 5.x.
Quote
The aavmker4.sys is the avast! Asynchronous Virus Monitor driver and from its name (the ker bit) is a kernel mode driver. See http://www.runscanner.net/file/Aavmker4.sys.html avast! Base Kernel-Mode Device Driver for Windows NT/2000/XP.

So if this windows event viewer entry is correct avast effectively wouldn't be running and there should be a red X over the avast icon.

The other aswSP.sys and aswTdi.sys are related to late avast 4.8 and avast 5 versions. The aswSP.sys is the avast self protection, the aswTdi.sys relates to the avast Network Shield.

You also have problems with SAS, are you running the Pro version or the free version ?

I don't know what these are VBoxDrv VBoxUSBMon, some sort of virtualisation, if this is a virtualbox and you are trying to run rocketdock and other things under that if those drivers aren't running I have no idea of the consequences if they aren't running.

So I'm not at all sure what is going on here but it doesn't appear to be down to a single instance/problem, but a collective failure for multiple drivers to load.

Ive never had avast 4.x on this computer which is kind of weird. and when it loads up avast does not have a red x, it looks normal does one or so spins then the computer freezes and nothing will run and its totally locked up, superantispyware runs well its the free version of it and i have it set not to start up when windows is loaded, the VBox ones are related to virtualbox, and there is also paragons drivers not starting either, maybe if this is related to rocketdock running i should try an alternative, but i find it weird that this only begins happening when i move from microsoft security essentials to avast, if i enable the rocketdock startup alot of problems occur if i don't none do.

No but that file goes back that far, so if you have only had avast 5 on this system it is unlikely it is directly related to that.

So avast also isn't loading along with a number of other what I would call crucial drivers and if they aren't running rocketdock is way down any list of priorities and I rather doubt it has anything to do with rocketdock. You could temporarily uninstall it nd see if it makes any difference but I doubt it.

As I said I'm on XP and using it and I have just rebooted and rocketdock booted as normal this time round.

I presume that you used Windows add remove programs to uninstall MSE ?

Having had MSE installed, I wonder if there aren't remnants of that left behind (low level drivers), which could be conflicting with avast and consequently these other applications. I don't know if there is another means of confirming that MSE has been completely uninstalled. Most manufactures have an uninstall utility to do a cleanup of registry entries, etc. if the regular uninstall didn't work properly.

See the first hit in this google search, http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=uninstall+utility+Microsoft+Security+Essentials.

Well i didn't find any uninstall tools for microsoft security essentials but i did a quick uninstall of avast and everything is back to normal again and rocketdock is running too now, its really weird.

That isn't weird, it is an indication of possible conflict, remove one element of a conflict, no conflict. The problem only being it doesn't find the true cause of the conflict.

I have never had MSE on this system and once again this morning RocketDock is running after boot.

I tried objectdock instead of rocketdock, and it seems to work with avast on my system

I considered ObjectDock a long time ago (more features), but liked the price of RocketDock ;D

Edit: Having said that I see they have a free personal edition.
