Many of my clients have dell laptops especially the ones that are having the wireless issue. I would think Avast would pull this version off the updater for now until they put the more stable one on so anyone who has a dell laptop doesn't do the upgrade and find they are not dead in the water.

That's an excellent idea. Why take the chance of creating more frustrated customers if you can avoid it?

no idea how it happened, I suddenly lost Internet access: router was okay, my adapter looked fine, just no access in Chrome and Thunderbird suddenly. Got it back after a reboot...

ps: I'm on an ethernet connection.

I installed this version because the previous one was giving me trouble, but I still get the same error message.

"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\AvastUI.exe

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail."

Can someone help me!? I've been trying to find a solution to this for months and it usually winds up being a dead end.

Well you have exactly the same error as me, see this post : http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68927.msg579317#msg579317

But after i did a restart the AvastUI started, did you tried to restart the machine after the install process ?

The side-by-side error so far is virtually always related to the c++ issue.

So yes I too think this error is unrelated to the 5.1.864 or 5.1.874 avast builds, but not having the correct C++ redistributable installed.

-- Side-By-Side Configuration is Incorrect Error - You need to install MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

Check here for a download link MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable.

Just writing to confirm that the pre-release is working great compared to V5.1.864. BOOT time scan now works correctly (little slower than expected compared to my 4 year old Laptop with WIN XP-PRO running Avast as well) and it also doesn't automatically reschedule itself anymore (when it was not working anyway, in the previous version).

Boot into Windows, browsing, malware scan, running application etc, etc is now back to normal.

However, I do recommend a full clean reinstall, which is faster imho. In my case I updated over the previous official release and restarted, but the OS froze/crashed without an error and did not boot normally. Uninstalled in Safemode. Clean install ran without issue.

System: WIN7 64bit (all updates), C2D@3.8, 4 GB RAM, Creative Xi-FI Titanuim (no more audio issues with pre-release), Software Firewall -ZoneAlarm Pro (no issues with Avast), Teatimer running in Paranoid mode (not activated via Start-up though).

Uninstall the Behavior Shield. Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> avast -> Change -> untick the Behavior Shield box.
Corel X5 problem: all the following applies to both 32 & 64 bit Windows.

It seems necessary to fully deactivate the behaviour shield module to avoid the crash described earlier when attempting to run Corel X5 (both Draw & Paint programs). Merely turning the behaviour shield off within the Avast GUI does NOT solve the problem, nor does adding files to the exception list.

You can download a trial version of Corel X5 at

http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/gb/en/Product/1191272117978#versionTabview=tab1&tabview=tab7

if you wish to see what happens for yourselves.

Is there anything more I can do to help you isolate the cause of this problem?

i just downloaded the installer for the free version that you gave us.  I have a test dell laptop that has this particular driver so i figured if it did not work- no great biggy.  This one is running xp pro sp3.(i had the older version before 5.1.854).
When clicking on the install and asking me if I wanted to upgrade- How come when it goes to upgrade it says it is version 5.1.854 instead of 5.1.874? I almost was hesitant to install it but i did anyway.  All went fine- no problem with dell wireless drivers -so far.  I opened the program and saw it did upgrade to the correct version though.

Will keep you posted if i find anything else weird happening.  I only tested the wireless and that is how i am typing to you all now.

Well since no one else seems to have had this problem or at least noticed it ill drop a note.
Since avast updated to 864 my start menu icons to about 5 secs to load after each reboot. I accidentally thought the problem come from microsoft onecare live which i ran online the same day avast updated so wasted alot of time trashing through registry and sux to no avail. Then i remembered the avast update and did an uninstall and presto. Start menu population instantly again.
With 874 this problem seems to have been fixed too.
Thx :)

I'm also seeing the 0xC0000005 error when I try to run a game called SimCity Societies. This is being caused by the Behavior Shield. When I uninstalled just the Behavior Shield, the game runs fine. Disabling the shield won't work, it has to be completely removed. It happens under both 864 and 874 builds. I'm running AIS under win7 ultimate 32-bit. No other issues noticed besides this one.

Anyone else notice the downloads read 5.0.874 not 5.1.874
Is it supposed to be that way??

yes, i posted it down a bit- wonder why they did not change the version number- that is confusing!
it installs with the correct number

I just sent it to you (edited post above). And yes the license file is there.

So the file is there even at the moment the program reports "expired"? (you'll probably have to reinstall to simulate the situation)
And also, please have a look in HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\ALWIL Software\Avast\5.0, is there a value called "LicenseFile", and is it pointing to the file?

Thanks
Vlk

i have the same issue when inserting the lic DURING install. if i do it after in the subscription tab its fine
