Best/Safest Browser to Use?
« on: January 05, 2011, 10:37:31 PM »
In light of my recent computer problems, I'm curious: What is the general opinion of the experts here at Avast as to which browser is the best, or perhaps more importantly, safest to use?

Of course, I've heard that IE (or anything Microsoft) is a major target for those wonderful folks who love to create viruses and malware.  But what about other browsers - Firefox, Google Chrome, others??

Thanks.

There is no safe browser.

There are ways to browse safely though.

I like Google Chrome on XP and IE9 on Windows 7.

I still prefer IE8 on my XP Pro system as that is what I am comfortable with.

I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) on my systems that provides additional protection from malware that avast! does not recognize:

I also have WinPatrol the System Security monitor:

Thanks, guys. Yes, YoKenny, I suppose you're right - nothing is truly "safe" when it comes to internet browsing. I just wondered if there were browsers that were less often "hit" by viruses and stuff, but I guess that just shows my ignorance. ;)

I also use Opera. It doesn't have much problems compared to other browsers and it is fast in my university's proxy compared to other browsers.

Google Chrome or Opera 11

I have used Opera 11 by a time, but I returned to Chrome. Because many sites are displayed incorrectly (missing links/hyperlinks and incompatibility) with Opera 11, but Opera is quite safer and less targeted by cyber-criminals.

chrome or firefox gets my vote.  IE is nice for sharepoint and other MS products, but not for much else.

Best is subjective and is what is best for/suits you.

For me that is currently Firefox, I like the flexibility/configurability add-on support and the interface is I have tried lots and tried them several times and found firefox far better than others I have tried. Chrome, Opera or IE (IE clones).

I installed the latest Firefox two days ago after 10 minutes surfing with it Avast gave a warning on a java script virus in the FF folder.  Luckily I do not have Java on my system, nor FF now - I think I will stick with IE9  ;D

No such warning on any javascript alert in firefox folders since I have been using firefox and avast.

Presumably you checked it out at virustotal :P
I can recommend a great malware removal specialist should you need one ;D
