how to install avast without internet conenction?
« on: January 07, 2011, 05:50:19 AM »
i was given a dell latitude cpx really old laptop running only 128 mb of ram and 15gb hard drive. It is running windows xp ( originally windows 98 though but who ever installed xp didn't put more ram in) . ANyway, it runs okay  but it has alot of viruses ( found over 500+) . I would like to install avast free edition, but i don't know which version would be suited for the laptop's specs. I also cannot go online at from the laptop at this time, so i want to know how to install avast ( whatever version suits me) without internet access. Thank you.

welcome i would recommend if your computer information is correct the free version of avast it takes up around 46 MB of ram the other version of avast takes a Little more ram to use so. suite 128 pro i don't know could be as the free or meaby 10-20 ram more. but if you upgrade the ram to like 1 or 2 GB you could go with witch version of avast you like without it will drag down your system.

but before that are you sure your system is clean, what have you done to clean it?

and 500 malware sounds a little to much in my ears.

have the computer been out antivirus program for along time?

to answer your question there, if you have another computer with internet access you could download avast to a usb and install it to the other computer through that.

or do you have a slow internet accec?

hopes this will help you on your why and hope you thanks for choosing avast:)

thanks mikael , i am going to try that . The person who gave me the laptop did not really take care of it or did not know how to take care of it so it ended up accumulating tons of malware. The laptop used to have mcafee ( folder still there) but when I got it, didn't have an antivirus running. Also, there is an issue w/ the laptops wireless network adapter so right now i cannot get the internet.

First, you may want to clear your System Restore points, and start with a new one.  Lower the value to 1% (the minimun allowed for XP) to give yourself more memory.

You most likely need to remove McAfee from your machine since you cannot have to AV's on the same machine since this will cause conflicts and possibly false positives.

Here is the uninstaller tools for McAfee:

This article provides the steps to remove McAfee from the Security Center from your computer:

Also for direct download: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe and http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe (2007)

Make sure you reboot your machine after running the McAfee Uninstaller tool.  Then try getting Internet access and see how your machine runs.

Also defrag your machine to clean it up after this, then reboot again.  Then try installing Avast Free from a USB stick (that you know is clean...but if you think your machine is infected this stick should not be used on a non-infected machine).

Let us know how you do.  Thank you.

When installed they could run a "removable media" scan to check the usb(flash) drive. Avast is so flexible.
