BSOD when I install full version of avast 5 internet security
« on: January 08, 2011, 11:56:57 PM »
Hi guys,

I am desperate for a bit of help here and hope that someone can give me some advice. Here is the situation...

I downloaded the free version of avast! anti virus and decided to upgrade to the full version of Internet security 5.0
When I try to restart my computer to complete the install I get the BSOD and the following codes;

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical information:

STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X0000000000000010, 0X0000000000000002, 0X0000000000000000, 0XFFFFF8800164E5D6)

ndis.sys - Address FFFFF8800164E5D6 base at FFFFF88001620000, DateStamp 4a5bc184

I am using a Sony Vaio & Windows 7.

If I start the computer in safe mode, the full version of avast is still usable. I am unable to start the computer in safe mode with networking so I revert back to safe mode and then carry out a system restore to the point just before installing avast.

The computer will then start normally but I only have the free version of avast on the computer.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Welcome to the forum, try a repair first and see if that helps:
Go to control panel choose Program and Features - select avast! then scroll down and select repair.
Reboot and see if that helps.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is a sign of down level drivers.

Do you have all Sony Vaio driver updates ???
Plus is Windows 7 up to date ???

You should have the corresponding minidump file in C:\Windows\Minidump (and if you have bigger dump creation enabled, also C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file) - could you please upload it/them to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming ?

Vaio and Windows is all up to date.

@Bob - Should I try the repair in safe mode or Windows normal mode. (Safe mode will allow me to use full version & Normal mode will only allow use of free version)

I have tried the repair option on both Avast free version and the full version.

I even tried turning off scan before windows start up to see what happened but I am still getting BSOD.

When in safe mode with full version I was having a play around to see if anything looked irregular (not that I am any kind of expert at all) but I did notice that Compatibility was set to Windows XP pack 3. I then tried to change it and Windows was recommended  Windows XP pack2 which I agreed to. I then tried to open the program to see if it worked correctly and windows was saying that the program was incompatible?

London_Lad, thanks for your dump. Your last crash was caused by athrx.sys driver (Atheos network driver). I'd suggest you to update this driver, your current version is compiled on Jul 09 02:49:13 2009. Or uninstall avast firewall, it might help.

been following with interest as I have exact same problem with BSOD "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL" when trying a full suite install.  Dropping the Avast firewall seems to be admitting defeat. Does Avast intend a fix or does each user have to figure it out all over again?

acpressly, your BSOD may not be related to avast or avast firewall, we need to look at minidump to see where exactly your OS crashed. Please send me a couple of the latest minidumps (\Windows\Minidump folder) to kurtin@avast.com. Thanks.

acpressly, your crash was also caused by athrx.sys driver (Atheos network driver), compiled on Jul 17 04:33:40 2009 (the identical crash as London_Lad). Please update this driver.

Install successful! updt driver was easy to updt in control panel devices.  I noticed my Windows Essentials is still running.  Should I deinstall Essentials?  Thanks again PK.  This is my last post unless maybe I go to Praha in spring.
