Avast won't start with oomputer
« on: January 11, 2011, 02:17:52 AM »
I recently re-installed Avast (5.0.677 because the more recent version seriously crashed my computer). Now Avast doesn't seem to start with my computer. After startup, AvastSvc.exe is running, but there is no icon in the taskbar. AvastUI.exe doesn't run until I start the program. I've ticked AvastUI in the startup tab of msconfig so it will run at startup, but after rebooting, the tick is always gone. Any suggestions? Win XP SP3

Try the removal tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (and follow the directions on that page).

You might have some left-overs that are causing problems.

After the uninstall, download the version that you wish to use (the one that was stable for you last time) and try again.  The reports so far say that the latest 5.1.864 should fix any remaining problems, so you could try that instead if you want.(http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=68494.0)

Thanks, I'll try the re-install, but I won't install 5.1.864 because that's the one that crashed my computer. I don't want to waste another 4-5 hours of my time on it. 5.0.677 has been working fine for me for several months.
