How to load the latest vps file manually ?
« on: January 12, 2011, 10:51:31 AM »
Hi I am new to this forum (and linux too). Recently downloaded Avast for Linux from http://files.avast.com/files/linux/avast4workstation_1.3.0-2_i386.deb and successfully installed it. It is running just fine.

I also downloaded the latest vps file from http://files.avast.com/files/latest/400.vps.I searched your forum for manual installation of latest vps and found this link http://forum.avast.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=37f54295f619d4d304142e56296b77c7&topic=56584.msg477278#msg477278. But the post does not explains clearly about it. Also I failed to find libavastengine package which the post refers to.

Please help me install the latest vps file manually. Don't tell me to update the database via terminal or gui as my internet connection breaks often.

I am running Linux(Ubuntu)OS.

Thanks

Metall, are you logged as root or can you get superuser privileges to copy that file?
Anyway, on Ubuntu/Linux, you don't need to update your avast that frequently and I will really think it would be better to do it by the interface.
It's a pity that the virus definitions aren't updated incrementally on Linux (only in Windows).

I am logged as root. Please specify where I should copy the vps file. I mean the location.
Is there any avast command to copy the file in that location.

One more query : Does Avast for Linux has on-access scanner or not ?

Plz help

Hallo,
just get it from the web:
http://files.avast.com/files/latest/XXX
XXX is either 400vps.md5 or 400.vps itself

and then, use avastvpsreload:
zilog@sinclair:~$ avastvpsreload -h
Usage: avastvpsreload [OPTION...]
avastvpsreload v4.7.6 -- the virus signature database reloader
Options:
-n, --count                Gets a number of the current VPS file allocations
-a, --all                  Include global VPS file (default user setting)
-u, --upload               Only install the new VPS file
-r, --reload               Only reload the current `400.vps' file
-d, --new-vps              Alternative path to the new VPS file
-v, --old-vps              Alternative path to the old `400.vps' file
-l, --log-file             Enable logging into file
-h, --help                 Give this help list
--usage                Give a short usage message
  -V, --version              Print program version

Hi,

I expecting some problem with manual update of avast! Linux Home Edition running on Ubuntu 10.10
The main problem that there no avastvpsreload in Home Edition, I found it in Linux/Unix edition kernel.
Home edition has avast-update only, but where I need to put 400.vps?
So just please explain how to manualy update home edition.

Thanks.

Home edition reloads the database using stop-and-refetch approach, but will obey avastvps-reloaded vps as well. The utility is in libavastengine package (available in our download section, see: http://www.avast.com/linux-unix-edition#tab4 )
