Thanks for the update, glad that it is now resolved and working for you.

It's STILL NOT WORKING. Either automatic updates of virus def files or manual updates are getting server error messages of http 412 or http 512 file not found! There is SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE UPDATE SERVERS!!!!!

I gte this error on all three computers running Avast Internet Security 5.1.889.

I am getting the same this morning (in New Zealand as well).

Same error message on three stand alone computers, Two were updated through the program to 5.1.899 & one was clean install (all Avast free Editition)

There's by now several other threads relating to this "file not found" thing.  In what seems to be the vast majority of cases, changing avast's update settings (for proxy) from direct-connection to auto-detect cleaned up this problem nicely.  Give that a try and see if it works for you.

This is the only thread i have posted in, would you like me to use the other thread also?

I posted in this one as it was top of the list relevant to the problem

Already done that on all 3 computers as posted in another thread. It makes NO DIFFERENCE.
ALL auto updates fail with file not found and either http 412 or 512 error. attempted manual updates of virus defintions file fail 3 out of 4 times with the same error message. It would seem that the Avast update servers are working properly when they receive auto or manual update requests...

I wonder how long it will take them to fix it?????

OK, just thought you may want to keep it consolidated to one thread as i know how hard it is to work with double posting  ;)

This is the exact error if it helps;

Last encounted error: Other HTTP error (412), while trying 174.36.159.212:80//iavs5x/prod-ais.vpx

Same problem ever since I used avast auto-update yesterday to update the program to the latest version.

Other http error 412.

Went through the pathetic re-install process during which the pc had to be rebooted TWICE! Major inconvenience. But, for some fantastic reason, the problem IS STILL UNRESOLVED! Why can't you people fix this???

Avast is listening, and I just sent them another message regarding the problems we are seeing here on the forum.

You can try several things to see if this helps your problem:

A.  Avast Repair:
- Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
- Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
- Reboot.

B.  If this fails, an uninstall / clean install (using the same version or a different version):

Version 5.1.889 download files:
Free:    http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro:    http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
AIS:    http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe

Version 5.0.677 download files:
Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe - (English only)
Freehttp://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe - (multi-language version)
Pro –  http://www.avast.com/pro-antivirus#tab4
AIS –  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all Avast versions and products).
3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
6. Reboot.
7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.
9. Update the Avast definitions.

C.  Wait for a new definition update to be pushed out from Avast to see if this fixes your problem.

D.  Make sure your settings are correct for the type of Internet connect you have in the Avast GUI.

E.  Make sure your firewall is not preventing Avast from connecting.
