Win32:Trojan-gen. {Other} in file sp.exe
« on: August 28, 2004, 09:32:32 AM »
Hi,

I just updated the virus definition file to 435-2.
After scanning my system it reveals a Win32:Trojan-gen. {Other} in the file C:\sp.exe
Is this a false positive or is my system really infected ?

In my registry there is no link to this file.

Thanks in advance,

rosso_acido

Unless sp.exe is a file you intentionally downloaded and know what it is (programme executables may have any possible name), chances are it's in fact related to something nasty (probably Coolwebsearch).

R (aka BS)

Hi,

I didn't dowload this file, so how it did get there I don't know.
So referring to your answer I can asume that it will not do any harm if I delete this file from my system or not ?

Thanks,

Moving it to the chest should be safe -- if something stops working, you can restore it from the chest instantly...

Please post a HijackThis file and do in the mean time as Vlk suggested. I got a feeling HJT will display some more thingson your system that shoouldn't be there.

Can somebody please tell me if there are some lines that are necessary to remove ?

I already removed the sp.exe file and everything seems to be working perfectly.

Thanks for the help,

Amid many other entries, a google search produced these 3 results:

http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/sp.exe.html

http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/s/spy_passkiller.asp

http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/t/trojan_win32_spooner.asp

It appears that this is a trojan or trojan/keylogger variant. Perhaps someone else can point out the entry in your HJT log.

Download Accelerator Plus is an adware implemented as Internet Explorer BHO (Browser Helper Object ). This program changes browser settings, displays popup/popunder ads,and silently tracks sites visited along with identification of the user/machine by GUID, IP address, email address, name, SSN#, phone number, credit card info, or other identifier.

I suggest you remove it.

If you need a good Download Manager, you can get StarDownloader HERE
They offer both a free and a Pro version. Neither version contains any spy or adware.

Hi,

I uninstalled DownloadAccelerator. Will focus on Stardowloader now to see if this is something for me.
I don't really download that much.

Thanks for all your help,
