Converting 4.8 to 5.1
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:09:19 PM »
I am about to converting my Avast 4.8 to version 5.1 but I want to know what to do first. Do I need a removal tool before I can surely get rid of the version 4.8 ?
My pc is a bit old, I only have 2 Gt of memory and 1.73 Ghz ( Win XP )

Please do the following steps:

1. Download the latest setup file. You did not tell us which version you are using, use the right one :

Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe

2. Download the avast unisntal utility from here : http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exe

3. Disconnect from the internet.

4. Uninstall version 4.8 from add/remove programs.

5. Reboot to safe mode.

6. Run the avast uninstall tool:

a). Select avast 4 home/professional from the drop down menu.
b). If you installed avast! in a different folder than the default, browse for it.
(Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)

7. Click REMOVE.

8. Restart your computer to normal mode.

9.Install the new version using the setup file you downloaded in the first step.

10. Connect to the internet and update to the latest antivirus database.

11. Register if you use free, insert license key if you use pro or internet security.

Never back down from anything. Just print the instructions and try. You can do it. The support for 4.8 will end soon.

Or you can do one thing if you are afraid of the whole process, just download the setup file from 1. (which ever is your version- free or pro or internet security) and install. It will take care of everything.

Let me know if you have any problems.

It's not that hard....
1. Download the installer.
2. Install over the top of 4.8.
You only need to uninstall the old version, if you encounter any probelems...!!

Yes...
Or you can make an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.
The best things in life are free.
