I can't confirm there's a major bug, but the latest version of Avast failed to update the first time when I never recalled Avast failing to update with earlier versions of Avast 4x.

Symptoms:

The red message box saying that an error occured when updating popped up.

The log file, Warning.log says the following:

8/30/2004   12:42:25 AM   1093840945   NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM   636   Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.
8/30/2004   12:43:40 AM   1093841020   NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM   636   An error has occured while attempting to update. Please check the logs.

The log file, Setup.log says the following:

Hmm, I don't see any problem here.
Appearently, the update attempt at 12:43am failed, but a retry at 1:03 succeeded. It's most likely that there was no Internet connection available at 12:43 (a temporary break down or something...) - all of the servers were said to be "down" which usually just means that the Internet could not be accessed..
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.
