Same problem here (tried a fresh install on my friends Vista 32-bit laptop) ... Avast caused the laptop to black screen at the logon prompt ... Only fix is to uninstall in Safe Mode.

Seriously?!?!  This has been out in the wild for over a year and it's still an issue ?

One followup: AVG installed fine

I agree!  I started this topic over a year ago, & I can’t believe the issue is still not resolved.  Are you listening, Avast???

The only way I could get around the problem was by going into Avast’s settings & selecting MANUAL updates, instead of Automatic.  That seems to have done the trick… so far, anyway.

The fact that it started over a year ago (on a different program version 5.0.677 - update to Avast, 5.1.889) doesn't mean this is the same problem.

The problem is that people keep posting to this Old Topic instead of creating their own one giving information about their particular problem and avast version. Then that problem can be addressed tarter than raking over the ashes of this old topic.

Hi, I just downloaded the latest update for Avast and my computer will not work.  I can't get the safe mode to work. When I click on safe mode, it goes to the XP logo where it supposed to start, blank out and start again. That has never happened to my computer before.  Now I have to pay someone to get it working again. This is messed up.

DavidR:
Yes, initially, it was version 5.0.677 whose update crashed my computer.  HOWEVER, I had the same problem with v. 5.1.889, v. 6.0.1289, etc… & presumably, this same problem is recurring with even later versions, judging by the volume of recent complaints.

The problem of updates crashing computers is clearly NOT limited to out-of-date versions, nor is it confined to just 1 or 2 individual users.
It would appear that for whatever reason, Avast’s update process has an intrinsic flaw that has NOT been corrected over time or across program “improvements.”

Please don’t be so quick to judge or dismiss forum members who’ve written about it.

No one is dismissing anything, but keeping an old topic alive just clutters it up and why the suggestion is made to create their own new topic. So far from dismissive.

Using XP pro, service pack 3. Zone alarm firewall free without anti virus. Free version avast! After installing latest update, computer would get to start up, I signed in then nothing happened for 4hrs. I restarted, then I got the blue screen! Thought I got a nasty virus. Scanned with malwarebytes, found some adware, nothing major. Tried to restart, still the same problem. I reinstalled a back up of my computer, then everything was fine. Updated avast then tried to restart. I repeated the whole previous process because I didn't think avast! was the problem. 3rd time now, suspecting it may have been avast! update, I ran my restored computer through a few processes. Went on the internet etc. I updated avast! again (banging head on a wall) and yep, you guessed it. Computer crashes again. Now, however, I know it's the avastt! update. 3 days wasted and right in the middle of a photo project. Way to go avast! Didn't these years of the same complaints make a difference? I'm taking avast! Off my computer and never going to try this again.

Same problem, latest update is in a continuous blue screen loop. Running win xp pro with sp3.  Had to restore back to before update.

Using XP pro, service pack 3. Zone alarm firewall free without anti virus.

You've to drop ZA, it isn't compatible anymore.
