Unable to update definitions. Error 412
« on: January 16, 2011, 08:19:22 PM »
Hi,

For some reason my Avast v5 does not download definitions.
It claims the error code 412.

At the moment it is saying that the definitions version is 110114-0, when I have just installed updates from the internet. (110116)

Is there a common problem here, or can someone please tell me what the issue is, and indeed, how to repair it.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall, but this has not helped.

Please help me, I really miss the woman telling me that my computer is up to date...

By the way, I don't know if this helps, but I just bought a new cpomp with wiondows 7 on it. My last (where it worked fine) was windows Vista.

If you need any more information, please ask.

Si

Hello Horseysi and welcome to the forum:
Have you tried a repair of the installation. Go to Contro Panel, Add and Remove Programs and select Avast. Then Click Change/Remove and then scroll down and select 'Repair'.
See if this helps.
If not there may be a corrupted install file and I recomend you do a 'Clean Install'
Please follow these instructions step by step.

Please download the latest official version of Avast (5.1.889) for the product you need and save it to your HDD:

        Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
        Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe
        Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe
Now Download the Avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0 versions).
•   1. Now uninstall Avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
•   2. run the Avast! Uninstall Utility from Safe Mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
•   3. install the latest version, reboot.

If you have any further problems please let us know :)

Hi, thanks for the response.

I did try a clean install prior to coming to this forum, however I did it again for the benefit of your advice.

I have now re-installed it from a new download that you gave me, and to no avail. It still comes up with the same error message:
last encountered error: Other HTTP error (412), while trying 208.43.121.90:80//iavs5x/prod-ais.vpx

This was when I tried to update definitions. It has also happened when trying to update program updates.

I have also tried to repair the program from the control panel. I have certainly run low on ideas, other than maybe it has something to do with Windows 7??
Please keep the ideas coming, or solutions would be better, but I will take anything I'm offered at the moment...

Cheers,

Si

I am having the same problem.  Fix did not work.  I've been getting the 412 error for about four days now.

AVG is working and scanned computer.  No viruses.  Please help.

UPDATE:
I downloaded the latest free edition, installed old version and installed new one. Avast is now showing the latest version of definitions as installed.  Whew!  :) Unfortunately, I see that this didn't work for everyone with the problem. Maybe just try again?

Earlier I wrote:
I'm wondering if there is an Avast server problem here.
My system: Windows 7
Been running Avast for almost a year on this machine, automatically updating Avast, no problems.
I have also done all the Windows recommended updates to date (Jan 17, 2011).

I used the Control Panel to Repair and (try to) Update Avast. I get the same message on that area that I did with Avast itself, when attempting to update:
"Other HTTP error (412) while trying 174.120.186..58:80//iavs5x/prod-ais.vpx"
Current version:
-program: 5.1.889
-vps: 110116-0
-setup: 5.1.889

Latest version available:
-program: 5.1.889
-vps: 110116-1
-setup: 5.1.889
Publishing date: Jan 17, 2011

Earlier, when I tried repeatedly to use the Avast interface to download update, my computer locked up completely (this has never happened before in the last year, believe it or not). It took a few tries to get it to boot back up.

I used my browser to go to the URL 174.120.186..58:80//iavs5x/prod-ais.vpx
and successfully downloaded the file: "prod-ais.vpx" so there is no problem with actually accessing the URL from my computer.

I won't post the entire log, but this last part might be useful:

Hi

I got the same problem and seeing as how many other People are having the same problem i believe that there must be something wrong with the avast update service itself.

here is a general definition for http error 412

412 Precondition Failed

This code indicates that the request was unsuccessful because one of the client's conditions was not met. For example, the client can tell the server ``only update this resource if the current version is X.'' If the current version is not ``X,'' the server returns a 412 response.

Please fix or help US fix this a soon as possible.
Thank you

Do you people use proxy to connect to the internet? Try selecting this option in:

Open avastgui > settings on the top right corner (see pic nmb0)

Select updates in the left hand column (see pic nmb1)

Select Auto detect (see pic nmb2)

Click ok.

Try updating again. If it doesn't, restart once and then update. (This seems to fix for some)

Hi

I also have tried all the settings available. My Avast is always set to auto detect. I have, to the best of my ability, tried everything on the forums, so now I am starting to get the impression it cannot be from my end? I am seriosly running out of ideas.

Incidently, I had the same set up on my Vista machine, and never had an issue. I have put it on this one with windows 7, and I have had this issue since the beginning. This is why I believe it could be linked

Please keep trying, I'm at my wits end!

Thank you.

Can you post the setup.log found at C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5 (On windows 7) or at least 100 to 200 hundred lines of the same file.
