Latest posts in rss format?
« on: August 30, 2004, 08:00:09 PM »
Hi,

Would it be possible to make the newest post available in rss format? So I can stay informed through my feedreader.

trigger,

RSS format is a specialized format for "discrete" read items.
Since YABB provides the basic forum structure, it is not possible to change it to RSS.

RSS requires a special RSS Aware reader and since most of the users here do not have such a utility, the format of the forum is geared to the general "populas".

rss readers read an url that is formatted in rss code, kind like xml. A lot of other forums I visit recreate that page everytime there is a new post somewhere. Most keep the last 10 to 25 messages there. I don't know what's the situation where you are, but overhere a lot of people use rss feed readers to stay informed. It beats pressing the f5 key everytime... I mean the "recent posts" at the forum home page is an example of the fact yabb is at leats possible to do something like it...

But, if it can't be done, it can't be done.

Yes, I understand that concept.

We are only concerned with this one.

What do you mean by "where you are"?  Not that it matters to the Forum since users here are from all over the world, but where is "overhere"?

Like I said, Avast only uses the Yabb formatted forum.....
It does not control how it does what. (As far as I know)

Maybe it can or maybe it can't!

Another thing to consider is that if we change, It means going back to school and learning all over again. I'm just getting comfy with YABBC. :)

I don't think we are talking of changing the YaBB forum interface, but having some software that converts existing posts (last 25, etc.) to rss format from the YaBB html format. Then post that content on to an rss feed page/site.

There is probably some software that can do it, but at what $ cost and how many would be able to use rss, or want to for that matter. If people only use the rss reader infrequently then they would miss a lot of posts if they only see the last 25 posts.

I don't believe a cost benefit analysis would support the cost of this function.

Man, I've stirred up something  :o

BTW "overhere" is The Netherlands....

I don't mean changing the forum, just add a function that will generate a small xml file everytime a post is made that is put somewhere on the web server...

In the morning I start with the read since last visit option, then during the days, I only use the feedreader to check on messages. It pops up when there is a change.

Depending on the database used "beneath" yabb, there could even be no costs involved. But hey, it's no big deal.

And the comment about other forums is just to point out it can be done.

Have noone ever noticed the, usually orange or green rss buttons on pages? I feel like I suggest something entiry new and unknown.

trigger,

No, you have not stirred up anything.  We here like a good conversation especially about something that we are not used to such as rss.

Truthfully, the only red and green buttons I am used to are the ones at the corners that tell me when to stop my car.  ;D

I guess the whole idea of rss/xml is entirely up to YaBB, NOT Avast.

Netherlands....beautiful country and friendly people.

Welcome to the forum.
