VLK, when I click on the http://www2.asw.cz/~vlk/vdd2.reg
the windows media player opens.  If I right click on the link and choose save target as I get a file named vdd2.mp3.

Interesting, me too...
Anyway, just rename the .mp3 file back to .reg and click on it.

Hmm, really interesting... Maybe Apache (our HTTP server) somehow thinks that .reg files are audio streams - and IE agrees... ;D

Anyway, here's a zipped version - works OK:

Cheers

FYI:

It's not only IE, Opera does the same. Both change the fileextension to .mp3

Firefox however thinks it is a quicktime movie ;D and leaves the fileextension .reg

Hope this little info helps finding/solving the problem.

Something like this?

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers]
"VDD"="C:\Program Files\avast!\aswMonVd.dll"
Avast Free Antivirus: Web Shield & Home Network Security.

No, because that would create the VDD value of type REG_SZ which is not correct (it must be REG_MULTI_SZ).

I don't recommend experimenting with this stuff... :)

You don't have to reinstall. Just change (edit) the thing in regedit instead of editing the .reg file and importing it...

On my old PC, I have installed the avast! Home Edition on WinXP Pro SP2, and see that the registry already have the:

"VDD"="C:\Program Files\avast!\aswMonVd.dll"

Is this normal?

Why are you asking? Of course it's normal. As I said, by far not all SP2 users are affected by this strange behavior...
