it's based on Chromium webbrowser
Why did you choose Chromium? Opera is good and fast browser also ;)

Chromium is open-source project. Opera is not.

Firefox is also open source.  There's probably some specific feature of Chromium that Alwil developers are interested in.

I'd say it's more dev.(s) related  :)

News about the new SafeZone and its browser:

The SafeZone Browser is a special web browser that you can use to access websites that contain sensitive personal or financial data. It runs in the virtual environment of avast! SafeZone, without the risk of being monitored by spyware or key-loggers.
The browser itself is without additional components such as plug-ins, which are often used to distribute malware.

If you use Firefox there are a number of addons that do the same thing.

Chrome has in-build sandbox that Firefox lacks of.

I have several extensions in Firefox that improves privacy and security.  I also use different Firefox profiles for different tasks.

I'll likely stick with it, but will give the SafeZone browser a test drive when it becomes available.

It's not a sandbox for security meanings, it's more stability wise.

Chrome sandbox is not a sandbox as we're thinking about. It's just that everything runs into a process, not virtualized.
SafeZone is a virtual desktop with a browser. It's not an addon that could be easily bypassed or misused.

I'd say the main thing here is the license under which the source code is distributed.

I am glad that you are happy with it.

Personally I use as few Google products as I can, with their email in very limited usage being the only exception.  I just don't like the company and their privacy invasion policies. :)

Chromium is under the BSD license.

Firefox is under the Mozilla Public License ("MPL") which references the GNU Project's LGPL or GPL.

For both, all of the new code and most of the legacy code is open source and can be freely distributed and used.  Both have some parts contained in their releases that may not be incorporated into commercial programs, unless I misread when I looked at the licenses.  I'll admit that I don't understand the full implications of the licenses, not being a Philadephia lawyer. ;D

SafeZone cannot reuse already installed user's webbrowser and modify it - it'd be most elegant (user can continue using his web browser s/he's used to it), but it's not safe. Finally, we could choose only between FF or Chromium engine. I'm a FF guy, I love FF and use it. Opera isn't also bad at all - my gf uses it so do I (unfortunately it's not open-source). Chromium is huge project, its source code is written very well - something what's not seen so often. We modified Chromium web browser, removed some problematic parts (e.g. autoloading of some plugins, ...) and we plan to implement other security plugins after v6 release when we get more time - and thus, Chromium was the evident choice.

MPL requires to release the source code of the modified parts.
Don't know how many modifications PK has done... but even if there wasn't anything we'd like to keep for ourselves there, it would certainly be an additional hassle.
