*** INTRODUCING: FIRST BETA VERSION OF AVAST 6 ***
« on: January 29, 2011, 10:02:07 PM »
Now updated to version 6.0.945.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=70655.0

Thanks
Vlk

Hi *,

we'll soon be releasing a new version of avast - the long-awaited version 6.0. As usual, we're making the new version available for public testing before it's officially released.

This is the first beta build of v6 - please treat it as such.

How to get it
Removed - get the latest build instead.

How to install it
Just run the setup executable (links above). This version needs to be installed from scratch, i.e. updating from a previous version of avast won't work. This will be fixed relatively soon - however, for now, the only option is to really uninstall the version you're using (if any), reboot, and install this beta.

Also, if you have already used a previous beta of the standalone WebRep, it's better to uninstall it before installing avast 6.

What's new
Main changes/improvements:
- AutoSandbox – suspicious programs will be optionally run sandboxed
- avast! WebRep – browser plugin for website reputation rating; a combination of data from our virus lab and community voting
- Script Shield now even in the Free AV
- Site Blocking now even in the Free AV
- SafeZone – a special virtualized area for sensitive transactions (e.g. secure online banking) (paid products only)
- Restore factory settings command (Settings -> Troubleshooting)
- Automatic actions in the boot-time scan
- New compression method in the installer makes the setup packages about 20% smaller.
- Script Shield now functional even with IE8/IE9 Protected Mode
- Sidebar gadget
- Improved stability/compatibility of the Behavior Shield
- Improvements in the avast! sandbox

Known issues
- Help files not updated yet
- Localizations incomplete yet
- SafeZone not yet accessible (Pro AV / IS only)
- WebRep only available for IE and Firefox (Chrome is coming soon)
- Firewall: per-application packet rules not yet accessible
- Firewall: uTorrent conflict not yet resolved

Thanks much
Vlk

Presumably the install from scratch means a clean install (uninstall, reboot, install) and doesn't include installation over the top of an existing 5.1.899 build.

Presumably the install from scratch means a clean install (uninstall, reboot, install) and doesn't include installation over the top of an existing 5.1.899 build.

That is correct.

There are two reasons for that:
1. because the compression method of the packages has changed
2. because the registry paths have changed

This will be fixed soon, but a clean install is a requirement of this first beta build.

Thanks

Ran a clean install and nothing works.  Fix it doesn't work, nothing will start.  I excluded it from OA, and rebooted a couple fo times, turned OA off and that didn't help and that didn't help.   Will try a fix from Programs and Features and a few other things before I give up.  W7x64, Avast! Pro
UPDATE  Repair didn't work, but uninstall/boot/reinstall fixed it.  OA interference with installation, even though I allowed maybe not enough flexibility?

Up and running smoothly  :).
But the WebRep toolbar is not fitting in the meaning of ”useful space”, is it possible to hide this bar but keep WebRep ON ?
Also i cannot activate WebRep on Firefox 4 b10(i don't find it in the addons).

I don't understand a beta of 6 when 5.1 isn't fixed. ::)

AIS's Antispam marks good mail as spam and I can't change it to good.

I can't do anything about my mail.

I have Antspam turned off.

Many have problems with the license key.

Many have problems getting 5.1 working.

Shouldn't  you get 5.1 right before going to 6 ???

Tried to install in a Win7 64 Virtual Machine.

Resulted in an error and the setup log attached

Downloading before my vacations...
I won't be able to extensively test it. I have finished its translation though (except the help files).

So far all is well after the reinstallation.  Only issue so far was again OA-with Run Safer on FF the autoinstallation of WebRep didn't work, even though there was a message asking if I wanted to install it.  Brought up FF normal, and it installed.  Manual installation in 5.1 didn't have this problem.  Will attack some of the new stuff tomorrow.  Congratulations on what appears to be a very stable first beta (after a rocky start ;) )  Sure would like the "save and restore settings" to replace the "back to factory" in the next beta.

You actually vote on the website while at the website-there is a popup showing the current status and allowing you to enter your vote.
