Greetings all,
On Jan 27th, using the 0300 GMT virus definitions release with avast 5.1.889, my two computers reported one or more Win32:Trojan-gen files (migwiz.exe on the gaming computer; two copies of migwiz.exe on my work computer along with an archive file in a system-restore directory). Ran full scans on both computers using Ad-aware and Malwarebytes - the gaming computer reported a registry entry for Rogue.WinAntiVirus in the Malwarebytes scan.
Avast downloaded a new virus definition update early that afternoon, so I ran boot-time scans on both computers and no problems found. When I scanned the files in the Virus Chest on my work computer, it reported nothing wrong with the files. So I restored them and ran another boot-time scan and no problems were reported. Same result with full scans for Ad-aware and Malwarebytes.
I switched to the gaming computer and restored the migwiz.exe file. I also ported over a copy of migwiz.exe from my work computer on a USB stick. I did another boot-time scan, no problems. Before deleting the extra migwiz.exe file, I ran a context-scan from Windows Explorer on the original file. The results dialog instantly appeared, reported "No threat found", but all the statistics (tested files, tested folders, amount of data tested) reported zero (0)! When I tried to repeat the scan, the option to perform the scan was not in the context menu! I then tried the context-scan on two executable files, the option was present for them but the results were the same; dialog instantly appears, "No threat found", all statistics zero (0). Then I tried the context-scan on the directory containing the files, the only difference was the number of folders was now one (1). So I tried another context-scan on a folder containing over 1400 directories and about 3500 files. This time, the timer actually counted (about 23 seconds) and it reported the correct number of folders, but the number of files and data scanned were still zero! Performing a "Quick Scan", "Full Scan" and boot-time scan reported the normal, expected results for the computer.
I rebooted the gaming computer and repeated the above tests with the same results.
Then I switched to my work computer and repeated the same tests and all of them worked normally, reporting the number of files scanned and the amount of data processed.
Has anyone run into this issue before - there are several related threads in this forum but none were exactly what I'm seeing. The gaming computer will still not perform a content-scan from Windows Explorer but in all other respects, avast appears to be operating normally.
I have used avast as it installed for about two years now and have not modified the scan options under the "Scan from Windows Explorer".
Sorry for the book, but I wanted to make sure it wasn't something simple first.
Have a great day,
