Provided you do not have something like another AV program installed that could be interfering, try a Repair.  Do this by starting to uninstall Avast! normally through Windows, but choose the "Repair" option when it presents itself and follow the steps.

Welcome to the forums, bigkev   :)

This is for XP but other Windows OSes will be similar.

To do a repair of avast :

Control panel  >  Add/remove programs  >  click once on avast to select it  >  click on Change/Remove  >  scroll down the left pane and click on repair  >  click OK  >  follow directions.

Hi bigkev :)

If you are using Windows 7, this is the way to go ;)

Repair of avast!

Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > select "avast! Internet Security" > click on Uninstall/Change
> Choose "Repair" from the left pane then folllow the steps.
